Introducing our new head chef, Peter Pankhurst!
"According to my mother when I was five years old, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would say that I wanted to be a cooker man. Some sort of unknown superhero. I even went to John Orr Technical High in Joburg to attend hotel school. After discovering the joys of ma*****na in my matric year I decided that getting up at four in the morning to make someone else’s breakfast was a bad idea and I became a professional ne’er do well for a long time.
Luckily I met and married my lovely wife who had the good sense to ask me, after the birth of our daughter, why I was so unhappy. I gave her the adult version of becoming a cookerman and she basically told me to go forth and live my life.
I have been lucky enough to have learnt from the likes of Marc Guebert of Ile de France, Jorn Pless Ma Cuisine, Mary Taylor and Janet Telian. I took over the kitchen of Savoy Cabbage from Janet and was there for a total of nineteen years, eighteen of those in charge of the kitchen.
I cook food because I believe that the sharing of food and company are amongst the most important parts of what seems lately to be a very unsteady civilisation. I cook in memory of my paternal grandmother, Arinula Pankhurst, the best cook my family had."
We welcome his experience and wisdom with open arms - come and experience his influence and watch his magic unfold!
