✨ The Story of Sarah and Her Ember Shelf ✨

Sarah had always dreamed of a home filled with warmth and personality, a place where she could unwind after a long day, surrounded by her favourite things. But her tiny flat, with its plain white walls, felt a little... sterile.

One day, while browsing online, she stumbled upon the Ember Shelf. Its unique design, with the warm glow of the pine wood and the sleek dark grey spine, instantly caught her eye. It was like a miniature fireplace, promising cosiness and comfort.

When the Ember Shelf arrived, Sarah carefully placed it on her living room wall. She arranged her most cherished books on the shelves, a small succulent on the top compartment and a framed photo of her family on the bottom.

A smile spread across her face as she stepped back to admire her work. The Ember Shelf wasn't just a shelf; it was a story - a story of her love for books, her connection to nature, and the warmth of family.

The once-empty wall now held a piece of her heart. And every time she looked at it, she felt a sense of peace and belonging.

The Ember Shelf had transformed her house into a home. ❤️

🤔 Thinking of using pallets for your raised garden beds? 🤔

There's a growing trend to repurpose pallets for garden projects, but hold on! 🤚 Before you jump on the bandwagon, consider this: your health and the health of your veggies might be at stake.

Here's why opting for new, untreated wood from sustainable sources is the way to go for your planter boxes:
🌱 Chemical Contamination: Pallets are often treated with nasty chemicals like methyl bromide or pressure treated with CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) to keep pests away. These chemicals can leach into your soil and end up in your food. Yikes! 😱 Reclaimed timber can also harbour hidden dangers like old paint or preservatives. That "bargain" planter box might be a hidden health hazard!

💪 Built to Last: Pallets are designed for heavy lifting, not for growing your prize-winning tomatoes. 😉 They might not hold up in the long run, especially with constant moisture. New wood is sturdier and more reliable.

🐛 Unwanted Guests: Pallets and reclaimed timber can harbour pests and diseases you don't want in your garden.

🌍 Eco-Friendly Choice: Sustainable forestry ensures responsible logging and protects our planet. With pallets and reclaimed timber, you often don't know where the wood came from.

✨ Aesthetics: New wood gives you a clean slate to create the perfect look for your garden. Paint it, stain it, personalise it! 🎨
The bottom line? While using pallets might seem cost-effective, it's important to prioritise safety and sustainability. Choose new, untreated wood for your planter boxes and enjoy peace of mind and a bountiful harvest! 🥕🥬

The doctor said, "My china, bru,
Your health's a mess, it's true!
Your back is sore, your knees are weak,
You need some sun and soil to tweak."

I said, "Ag man, what must I do?
This gardening is making me feel blue!
These slugs and snails, they drive me mad,
My lettuce patch is looking sad."

He said, "Don't worry, my bra, no stress,
For GardenStuff will cure this mess!
Their wooden planters raised up high,
Will make your veggies touch the sky!"

So off I went, with bakkie full,
Of planters strong, and lekker tools.
No more bending, no more strain,
Just happy plants and gentle rain.

I filled those boxes, neat and grand,
With herbs and flowers close at hand.
The slugs gave up, they couldn't climb,
My veggies thrived in perfect time.

Now I'm as happy as can be,
No aching back, just victory!
My garden blooms, a vibrant hue,
Thanks to GardenStuff, it's true!

So if you're struggling, feeling down,
With pests and weeds all over town,
Just get yourself to GardenStuff,
Their planters are the winning stuff!

No more kneeling, no more pain,
Just happy growth, sunshine and rain.
So thank you, doc, and GardenStuff too,
My garden's thriving, thanks to you!

From Couch Potato to Urban Farmer (Episode 5):
Confessions of a Kale Convert (and Other Tales from My Urban Jungle)

Howzit, green fingers! 👋 Thandi here, back with another update from my ever-growing urban farm. And let me tell you, things have been getting wild! (In a good way, of course.)

Lettuce Celebrate!

Remember those three little butter lettuce plugs? They've officially taken over! I'm harvesting a generous portion every three to four days, and I haven't bought lettuce from the shop in weeks. My fridge is overflowing with leafy goodness, and I'm finding new ways to incorporate it into every meal. Salads, sandwiches, wraps, you name it, I'm adding lettuce to it.

Kale Yeah!

And guess what? I've officially become a kale convert! Remember how I planted a single tiny kale seedling without really knowing what to do with it? Well, curiosity (and a dwindling supply of spinach) got the better of me, and I decided to give it a try.
I sautéed a few leaves in butter with garlic, salt and a sq**rt of lemon juice, and oh my goodness, it was delicious! Who knew kale could be so versatile? I've been adding it to smoothies and stir-fries and baking it into chips. My kale plant is thriving, and I'm already planning my next harvest.

Beyond the Garden Walls

This gardening journey has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I notice other people's gardens, admire their plant choices and wonder about their techniques. I am visiting my guru grandmother more often, soaking up her wisdom and enjoying the tranquillity of her sprawling garden.
My trips to the local nursery have also become more frequent (and more dangerous for my wallet!). I'm constantly inspired by the variety of plants and eager to experiment with new additions to my urban farm.

Pro-Tip Alert:

Speaking of inspiration, here's a tip I picked up from a fellow gardener: If you're short on space, try vertical gardening! You can use trellises, hanging baskets, or pots to grow plants upwards. It's a great way to maximise your growing area and add visual interest to your garden. I am also eyeing the beautiful choices offered by GardenStuff.

What's Next?

I'm itching to expand my veggie patch and try my hand at growing some new crops. I plan to add some tomatoes, peppers, and maybe some cucumbers. Stay tuned for more updates on my urban farming adventures!

Until next time, happy gardening!

October Gardening in Gauteng: Wooden Planters Edition

Gauteng gardeners, it's time to dust off those wooden planters and get ready for a bountiful October harvest! Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, this month offers a fantastic opportunity to grow various delicious vegetables and herbs right at your doorstep. 🌱

What to Plant:
• Leafy Greens: Lettuces, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard thrive in the cooler October temperatures. Mix and match varieties for a colourful salad bowl.
• Root Vegetables: Carrots, beets, and radishes are perfect for wooden planters. Try planting baby carrots for a quick and easy snack.
• Herbs: Basil, parsley, cilantro, and chives add flavour and freshness to your dishes. Plant them in small pots or directly in your planters alongside your vegetables.
• Climbing Vegetables: If your planter is tall enough, consider growing climbing beans or peas. They'll add vertical interest and provide a tasty harvest.

Little-Known Tricks:
• Coffee Grounds: Sprinkle used coffee grounds around your plants to deter slugs and snails. They also act as a natural fertiliser, boosting your plants' growth.
• Companion Planting: Plant marigolds alongside your vegetables to repel pests and attract beneficial insects. Basil planted near tomatoes enhances their flavour.

Better Alternatives for Preventing Blossom End Rot:
• Ensure consistent watering to avoid calcium deficiency.
• Use a calcium-based fertiliser specifically formulated for tomatoes and peppers.
• Test your soil's pH level and, if necessary, adjust it for optimal calcium uptake.

Practical Examples:
• Salad Planter: Combine lettuce, spinach, and radishes in a single planter for a fresh and flavorful salad mix.
• Herb Garden: Plant basil, parsley, and chives together to create a mini herb garden. Your kitchen will have a constant supply of fresh herbs.
• Root Vegetable Delight: Plant carrots and beets in a deeper planter for a colourful and nutritious harvest.

Call to Action:
Share your October planting plans in the comments below! Let's inspire each other and create a thriving gardening community in Gauteng. Remember to share this post with your fellow gardeners and tag your friends who love to grow their own food. Happy planting! 🌻

October Gardening in the Western Cape: A Bounty Awaits!

Spring is in full swing in the Western Cape, and it's the perfect time to get your garden bursting with flavour! Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just starting out, October offers a fantastic opportunity to plant various vegetables and herbs that will thrive in our Mediterranean climate.

Vegetables to Sow and Transplant:
• Leafy Greens: Lettuces, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and rocket will flourish in the warming soil. Sow seeds directly or transplant seedlings for a continuous harvest.
• Root Vegetables: Carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips love the cooler temperatures of early spring. Plant them now for a sweet and crunchy harvest later.
• Brassicas: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts can be started indoors or sown directly into the garden. Protect young seedlings from birds and pests.
• Alliums: Plant onions, garlic, and leeks from seeds or seedlings. Choose varieties that are well-suited to our climate.
• Cucurbits: Cucumbers, zucchini, and pumpkins can be started indoors or sown directly once the soil has warmed up. Provide plenty of sunshine and water.
• Legumes: Beans and peas are nitrogen-fixers that enrich the soil. Plant them in full sun and provide support for climbing varieties.

Herbs to Plant:
• Basil: This versatile herb loves warmth and sunshine. Plant it in pots or directly in the garden.
• Parsley: It is a must-have for any kitchen garden. Sow seeds directly or transplant seedlings.
• Rosemary: This hardy herb thrives in our Mediterranean climate. Plant it in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
• Thyme: Another low-maintenance herb that adds flavour to many dishes. Plant it in pots or directly in the garden.
• Mint: This vigorous grower can be invasive, so plant it in pots or containers.

Little-Known Tricks for Success:
• Companion Planting: Plant marigolds near tomatoes to deter pests. Basil and tomatoes are also great companions, enhancing each other's flavour.
• Succession Planting: Sow seeds every few weeks for a continuous harvest of leafy greens and root vegetables.
• Vertical Gardening: Maximise space by growing herbs and climbing vegetables in vertical planters or hanging baskets.
• Water Wisely: Water deeply and less frequently to encourage strong root growth. Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
