Share a piece of Norval Foundation’s history — the ‘Heliostat: Wim Botha’ catalogue is now available to purchase online.

Heliostat: Wim Botha focuses on key works in the South African artist’s career spanning two decades. A keen student of European art history, Botha has throughout his career wrestled with the legacy of seminal artworks from antiquity, the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods, searching for their relevance within a contemporary South African context. Simultaneously, he has taken symbols associated with his own Afrikaans identity and shifted their meanings in subtle yet powerful ways.

‘Nine Weeks’ is a series of watercolour self-portraits, one each day, over the first 63 days of the government-mandated lock-down in South Africa due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Gratrix charts her changing mental states during a period of isolation through these self-portraits.

William Kentridge’s ‘Why Should I Hesitate: Sculpture’ address Kentridge’s output as a sculptor. Covering several bodies of work, and testifying to his long standing improvisation when handling three-dimensional form, this publication sees the origins of these works in props from his operas and images from his animations stepping off the stage and out of the screen, confronting us directly at ground level. This unique publication contains 24 never before- seen preparatory sketches, with 12 chapters covering 12 different aspects of William Kentridge’s sculptural practice. The pages contain personal writing by the artist, conveying insights into his working methods and a visual index of all three-dimensional artworks William Kentridge has created, including artwork details, from 1984 to the present.

Purchase the exhibition catalogue of 'Labour of Many: Ibrahim Mahama' online.

Ibrahim Mahama’s rigorous, socially engaged and process-based practice, brings to the fore Africa’s role in the global exchange of commodities while considering the movement of its people and how labour is valued. Covering surfaces with jute sacks, he contrasts the humility of the materials with the monumentality of space. Through sketches and images, this publication documents the process undertaken to complete his installations, and is also a meditation on Mahama’s practice more broadly.

Purchase a piece of history with the ‘Re/discovery and Memory’ catalogue, Norval Foundation’s first publication.

‘Re/discovery and Memory’ included major retrospectives of the work of both Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae, shown alongside an exhibition of their friend and colleague Edoardo Villa. The Kumalo and Legae retrospectives, the first to be undertaken by any institution globally, brought together a considerable body of work: a series of bronzes and drawings chronicling their innovative artistic practices. The Villa exhibition focused on the work he produced in the period of 1958-68 and centred around his monumental sculpture ‘Africa’ (1958).
