Case study: Country living

Specified by Wynand Wilsenach Architects, this residence integrates structural timber, bespoke joinery and precision flooring within a contemporary gabled architectural language.

The entrance establishes the material hierarchy through Forza flooring by Dutch artisans Hakwood, laid in a herringbone parquet configuration, defining the threshold and setting the tonal direction for the home.

Beyond the arrival space, Forza flooring extends through the primary living areas, maintaining continuity and reinforcing spatial cohesion across the interior.

From exposed roof trusses to custom cabinetry and integrated detailing, the project reflects disciplined timber ex*****on at both architectural and fine-detail scale.

Material performance, proven in place.
The best exterior materials are not judged by appearance alone.
They are measured by how they perform over time.
Kebony is specified globally across residential, commercial, and public realm projects where durability, stability, and longevity are essential.
Its patented Dual Modification™ technology permanently enhances sustainably sourced timber at a cellular level, creating a material that performs to the standards of hardwood without the associated environmental cost.
For architects and designers, this means confidence in both cladding and decking applications.
Class 1 durability (EN 350).
Exceptional dimensional stability.
No toxic treatments.
No ongoing coating requirements.
Over time, Kebony's rich brown appearance naturally evolves into a refined silver-grey patina, allowing projects to age with consistency and character.
Specified for performance.
Designed for longevity.

Case study: exterior decking for architecture shaped by the landscape.

Located on the outskirts of Valle de Bravo, Mexico, this lakeside clubhouse pavilion was designed by Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos to frame 360-degree views of the surrounding lake and mountains.

The architecture is restrained, open, and deeply connected to its setting.

Kebony Character decking is used to complete the exterior experience, creating a warm, durable timber surface for a pavilion exposed to sun, water, foot traffic, and seasonal change.

For hospitality projects, lodges, resorts, and high-end residential environments, this is where exterior timber specification matters.

Kebony offers the natural character of timber with the stability, durability, and longevity required for demanding exterior applications.

Over time, the timber will weather naturally to a soft silver-grey patina, allowing the pavilion to settle further into its landscape.

Case study: Jardan HQ, Melbourne

IF Architecture created a commercial interior that feels calm and tactile, using timber not simply as a finish but as part of the space’s architectural language.

A defining element throughout the project is the use of Leeuwenburgh Beamwood & Sawn Oak, Limed veneer.

Unlike conventional flat veneer panels, Beamwood introduces rhythm, shadow, and depth through a linear timber expression that changes subtly as light moves across the surface. The result feels architectural rather than decorative — warm, refined, and highly resolved at scale.

Beyond traditional veneer species and careful timber selection, Leeuwenburgh has developed specialised systems such as Beamwood and 3D veneer collections, as well as its Lignapal prefinished veneer range.

Processes such as Waterfall Finish, Grain Enhancement, and Adaptive Colouring are designed to preserve the depth, texture, and natural variation of real wood while maintaining consistency across large-scale architectural applications.

For specifiers, this matters.

Leeuwenburgh veneer systems are now available in South Africa exclusively through Bestwood.

Material Intelligence: Engineered timber with the character of reclaimed oak.

Hakwood hand-hewn floors are designed to bring depth, texture, and permanence into contemporary interiors.

Each board is intentionally worked to expose grain movement, knots, and natural variation, creating a surface that feels architectural rather than decorative.

What makes this relevant in specification is that the visual weight of reclaimed timber is achieved with the precision and stability of a modern engineered construction.

The result is a floor that performs consistently across demanding interior environments while retaining the irregularity and tactility associated with century-old wood.

Its layered construction improves dimensional stability, making it well suited to large-format residential applications and hospitality environments.

Visually, the appeal lies in restraint.

The hand-hewn texture catches light differently throughout the day, softening expansive spaces and introducing a quieter, more natural material expression.

No imitation.
No artificial distressing.

Just timber shaped to feel enduring from the moment it is installed.

Case study: material restraint...

Set against the mountains of Vermont, this private home is specified with material restraint, creating warmth, calm, and permanence, particularly suited to long winters and changing light.

Bespoke European Oak flooring by was installed throughout, creating a cohesive system that brings depth and continuity to the interior architecture.

Darker tones ground the open spaces, while the natural texture of the wood softens the clean architectural lines.

The combination of natural oak, muted light, and fire creates an interior that feels quiet, grounded, and enduring rather than overly styled or temporary.

Specified by Joan Heaton Architects together with Stoneledge Farm + Home Interior Designer.

Material intelligence: a superior timber system for exterior applications.

Kebony removes the traditional trade-offs in exterior timber.

Its patented Dual Modification™ process permanently changes the wood at a cellular level, increasing density, stability, and durability, without introducing brittleness.

For specification, this is most relevant in cladding and decking.

You’re working with a Class 1 durable material (EN 350), comparable to hardwood, but sourced from FSC-certified softwood and produced with a significantly lower environmental impact. No toxic treatments. No ongoing coatings.

Visually, it performs just as well.

begins as a warm brown and naturally weathers to a soft silver-grey patina evenly, and without intervention.

Not a compromise.

Case study: a building shaped by its environment.

Set on a windswept Scottish shoreline, Rock Cove is defined by restraint, a simple, horizontal form anchored into the landscape, opening fully to the water while remaining protected from the elements.

is used to wrap the building as a continuous timber system carried from the exterior façade into the interior ceilings, creating a calm, unified material language throughout.

Constant exposure to salt air, wind, and moisture demands a material that is stable, durable, and predictable over time without reliance on coatings or ongoing maintenance.

The timber begins warm and natural, then gradually weathers to a soft silver-grey externally, while internally it retains its tone, reinforcing the connection between inside and out without compromising performance.

This is where specification becomes architectural.

Not just how a building looks on completion, but how it will read and endure over time.

Specified with intent.
Resolved for decades.
