🎶 RECORD OF THE WEEK | DEBBIE HARRY – KOOKOO 🎶

This week’s ROTW takes us somewhere a little strange, stylish and wonderfully unexpected…

Before Debbie Harry became firmly established as a solo artist, she stepped away from Blondie and teamed up with two of the most important names in funk and disco: Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic.

The result was KooKoo — Debbie Harry’s 1981 debut solo album, and a fascinating collision of funk, dance, new wave, rock and art-pop.

Released at a fascinating moment in New York music, KooKoo found Harry exploring a very different sound from Blondie. Rodgers and Edwards brought their trademark rhythmic precision to the record, while Harry and Chris Stein pushed things into stranger, darker territory.

And then there’s that cover…

Designed by legendary Swiss artist H.R. Giger, the unforgettable artwork features Debbie Harry with metallic spikes apparently piercing her face — an image that became almost as talked-about as the music itself. Giger also directed the video for “Backfired.”

KooKoo may not have followed the obvious path for one of the biggest names of the New York punk/new-wave scene, but that’s precisely what makes it such an interesting record to revisit.

👑 Janet Jackson – Rhythm Nation 1814

It’s Women's Month, we're celebrating one of music's most influential artists with a true landmark album.

Released in 1989, Rhythm Nation 1814 redefined what a pop album could be. Blending pop, R&B, funk, new jack swing and socially conscious storytelling, Janet Jackson delivered an album that was both a commercial powerhouse and a bold artistic statement. Featuring classics like Miss You Much, Escapade, Rhythm Nation, and Love Will Never Do (Without You), it remains one of the defining albums of its era.

More than three decades later, its message of unity, empowerment and positive change still resonates, making it a fitting Record Of The Week as we celebrate Women's Month in South Africa.

This week we're shining the spotlight on a true South African classic — Harari – Genesis (1977).

A groundbreaking fusion of Afro-rock, funk, soul, jazz, and psychedelic influences that helped shape the sound of a generation.

Harari were pioneers in every sense of the word. They became the first black pop/rock band to appear on South African television and the first black band to headline their own show at Johannesburg's Colosseum Theatre. Their fearless blending of styles and cultures made them one of the country's most important musical exports.

💿 Genesis is widely regarded as one of the essential albums in South African music history, and original pressings have become increasingly sought-after by collectors worldwide. Finding a clean 1977 copy is becoming harder every year, making this a special addition to any serious collection.

Concert In The Park – a legendary double LP recorded at the iconic 1985 benefit concert held at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg. The event brought together some of South Africa's biggest artists of the era, raising funds for Operation Hunger.

Featuring an incredible line-up including Juluka, Brenda & The Big Dudes, Via Afrika, Harari, Steve Kekana, Margaret Singana, éVoid, Hotline and many more, this album captures a unique moment in South African music history. Highlights include the anthem "Hungry Child", "Weekend Special", "Scatterlings of Africa", and "Hey Boy".
