The Net Vir Pret Puppet Parade and Performance is a landmark annual arts event in the creative and unique farming village of Barrydale on the famous R62 route in the Klein Karoo. Every year the parade draws puppeteers, musicians, performers and public both locally and from around the world to work with the local children to celebrate and explore powerful, relevant issues of community, conservation and heritage through the art of puppetry.
‘Rhino slaughter is at a record high in KwaZulu-Natal’ were the latest headlines in the Herald Newspaper and this year the Net vir Pret Parade will be tackling the devastating effects of rhino poaching and international poaching syndicates on our most endangered large animals.
In association with the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape, Ukwanda puppet makers will be bringing life-size Rhino’s to the Tradouw Valley of Barrydale, performing amongst hundreds of puppets designed and created by local school learners through Net Vir Pret, and directed by Aja Marneweck. Original music for the production eill be composed by Peter Takelo and Gary Crawford.
This unique annual public arts event promises to inspire young and old alike, bringing together adults and children from all walks of life to bring awareness to the desperate needs of our Rhinos and to celebrate our powerful South African heritage.
