We have the pleasure of welcoming local Amanzimtoti artist Scott Kotze to our club meeting this month.

Scott specialises in oil paintings, creating beautiful works featuring people, animals, and nature. His expressive style and love of the natural world are reflected in his captivating artworks, and we look forward to an inspiring demonstration and the opportunity to learn from his experience.

He will tell us more about the Grisaille method of painting, and help us to understand the importance of TONAL VALUES!!

Scott writes:
Exploring Tonal Values with the Grisaille method in oils.
We will be looking at the often-overlooked importance of tonal values in painting by exploring theGrisaille method.
Grisaille (griz-eye) is a French word meaning grayness. It is a painting technique as old as oilpainting itself and was used by the father of oil painting, Jan van Eyck (1390-1441).

Grisaille is a monochromatic underpainting, usually in shades of gray, brown or green. Once the underpainting is completely dry, colour is added by glazing transparent layers of paint over it. This method allows the artist to focus on tonal values, creating form and volume, without thedistraction of colour.

This month we will be creating our own tonal value scale as part of the practical session.
