AUTHOR EVENT: Prince Rupert-based food producer and author Ken Shaw will present his new book next week in Daajing Giids and Masset!

From the book’s description:

New anthology with writing by LOCAL AUTHOR (me): By the Dozen

Hello, Haida Gwaii. Hello, friends. David here — sometimes I’m behind the till in the bookshop. I want to introduce you to a new publication from Sick Stories in Toronto called BY THE DOZEN.

I’m proud to be part of this anthology by 12 disabled, chronically ill, mentally ill, and neurodivergent writers. My contribution is “The wind feels nice: a brain fog memoir”. It’s a whimsical and serious look at some of my experiences across a lifetime of chronic illness in all its moods. Kind of like the weather.

We’re sending profits from sales of this book back to Sick Stories to support their work amplifying stories of disability.

Here’s the publisher’s description:

“Time-travel, anarchy, the soft appreciation of the wind, ICE detentions, grief, tech, pain.

A dozen writers. A dozen stories published online over a calendar year and collated into a chapbook.

With fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, this anthology celebrates the diversity of disability literature. Inside these pages is an exploration of what it means to exist in bodies that defy convention.”

🎤✨ NEW: We’re hosting a Spoken Word Night on Friday, April 24!

In celebration of Canadian Independent Bookstore Day 2026 (and our 3rd year of operation), we invite you to this free community event at Which 3rd Avenue Books.

It’ll be an open mic.
Read or recite your original poems or favourites, or just listen and feel inspired.

The shop opens at 6 pm, and the event will start at 7.

📕 Book donation policy

Our shop offers new and used books, and some of those used books have come from donations. We love that so many of you are thoughtful about passing along books you no longer want, downsizing your library, et cetera. Haawa for thinking of us. ❤️

However, we don’t have the capacity to receive donations on a regular basis. To help us manage the influx of donation offers, we now have an official book donation policy:

We are only interested in large collections. If you have a large library of books such as an estate or are downsizing households, please contact us at [email protected] or come visit us in the shop, and we’ll discuss any options we can offer.

Heidi had 30 seconds on live radio to explain the ineffable, brilliant, galaxy-brained alchemy that goes into her bookshop curation, and she nailed it. 😅 Truly, we want to help you find your next favourite book. I’ve heard a lot of compliments from you all about our selection. (Hi, David here.) In case you didn’t know, Heidi handles most of that. What she dreams up, you see in the store. I mean, I pitch in too, but let’s give credit where credit’s due.

Before sunrise yesterday, we spoke with Carolina de Ryk live on the radio program about some of things we love about operating our little shop and community space.

Many thanks to Carolina, Nicole, and the rest of the team at CBC in Prince Rupert! (And we appreciate any title with a pun. 10/10)

What a year! 😅 Before sharing a bit of housekeeping news, we wanted to offer a heartfelt thank-you and haawa to everyone across Haida Gwaii for all your support and your passion for reading this year! Every order and visit to the shop makes a difference to us. 2025 has been a challenging but satisfying year and we can’t wait to continue in 2026! For now, here’s what you need to know:

Online shopping remains open through the holidays! Browse at which3avebooks.com or email us at [email protected] to order something you can’t find. You can pick up orders at the bookshop just about any time.

We are taking a break and closing the physical shop from today until the end of January. We’ll likely open again the last weekend of the month, Jan 30-31.
