My sister gave me the most thoughtful Christmas gift this year—a book I’d noticed on ’ favorite books of the year list.

I don’t know much about engineering, but like many of us, I’ve been surrounded by its creations my whole life. It made me think, “Maybe it’s time to really understand the world that engineers help build for us.”

What struck me right away was the author’s own story—starting with a liberal arts background in university and later pivoting to engineering in graduate school. It’s such an unexpected yet inspiring shift:

“I finished my degree not only with a job but also with an entirely new way of looking at the world. It didn’t take long for that enthusiasm and excitement about infrastructure to overflow into my personal life, including my hobby YouTube channel. What started as a way to share my woodworking projects with other makers and craftspeople slowly turned into an outlet for introducing topics in engineering to the world. Now I produce educational videos …”

It’s a reminder that learning can take us in the most surprising and fulfilling directions. Wishing you all the joy and wonder in your own learning journeys this year! 🎀💙

This is the story of Rahel and Estha, twins growing up among the banana vats and peppercorns of their blind grandmother’s factory, and amid scenes of political turbulence in Kerala. Armed only with the innocence of youth, they fashion a childhood in the shade of the wreck that is their family: their lonely, lovely mother, their beloved Uncle Chacko (pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher) and their sworn enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun, incumbent grand-aunt).

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy stands apart from other family novels with its non-linear storytelling, poetic prose, and focus on how small moments and social rules shape lives. Set in Kerala, it intertwines personal tragedies with larger themes of caste, politics, and forbidden love. It’s not just a family story—it’s a deeply layered exploration of how the past and societal pressures haunt the present.

The publication of Spotify Wrapped made me wonder what’s my book wrap of the year. This year, I don’t really read much but I’ve been experimenting with other platforms, such as listening to audiobooks on Libby app, and reading Kindle books. If having conversations with humans on various topics count as reading human books, that is the third platform I’ve been practicing this year.

Favorite books of the year are I guess - no ordering at all:
• Fountainhead
• Group
• Atlas of the Heart
• The unexpected truth about animals
• Conquering the college admissions essay in 10 steps
• If reading .vn newspapers count, then it is

I guess people expect one book from the question “Which book is your favorite this year?”, but yes I’m indecisive.

Which book is your favorite this year?

🌙 DESCRIPTION: “The national bestselling author of A Thousand Ships and Pandora’s Jar returns with a fresh and stunningly perceptive take on the story of Medusa, the original monstered woman.

They will fear you and flee you and call you a monster.

The only mortal in a family of gods, Medusa is the youngest of the Gorgon sisters. Unlike her siblings, Medusa grows older, experiences change, feels weakness. Her mortal lifespan gives her an urgency that her family will never know.

When the sea god Poseidon assaults Medusa in Athene’s temple, the goddess is enraged. Furious by the violation of her sacred space, Athene takes revenge—on the young woman. Punished for Poseidon’s actions, Medusa is forever transformed. Writhing snakes replace her hair and her gaze will turn any living creature to stone. Cursed with the power to destroy all she loves with one look, Medusa condemns herself to a life of solitude.

Until Perseus embarks upon a fateful quest to fetch the head of a Gorgon . . .

In Stone Blind, classicist and comedian Natalie Haynes turns our understanding of this legendary myth on its head, bringing empathy and nuance to one of the earliest stories in which a woman—injured by a powerful man—is blamed, punished, and monstered for the assault. Delving into the origins of this mythic tale, Haynes revitalizes and reconstructs Medusa’s story with her passion and fierce wit, offering a timely retelling of this classic myth that speaks to us today.” (Amazon)

🌙 DESCRIPTION: “'To girls everywhere, I am with you. On nights when you feel alone, I am with you. When people doubt you or dismiss you, I am with you. I fought every day for you. So never stop fighting, I believe you.'

Chanel Miller's story changed our world forever. In 2016 Brock Turner was sentenced to just six months in jail after he was caught sexually assaulting her on Stanford's campus. His light sentencing, and Chanel's victim impact statement, which was read by eleven million people in four days, sparked international outrage and action.

Know My Name is an intimate, profoundly moving memoir that exposes a patriarchal culture biased to protect perpetrators, a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and ultimately shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life. Entwining pain, resilience, and humour, this breath-taking memoir will stand as a modern classic.” (Amazon)
