Today, we celebrate the emancipation of the slaves. During that time, in 1848, the now US Virgin Islands, were known as the Danish West Indies and we were governed by Governor General Von Scholten. Freedom was granted on the island of St. Croix, in Frederiksted town (hence the name Freedom City) for the ENTIRE Danish West Indies. And it was done without a single drop of blood needing to be shed on that day.
On St. Croix and throughout the entire US Virgin Islands, General Buddhoe, nee Joseph or Moses Gottlieb, is looked upon as the Emancipator of his people. His planning and organization of the slaves to the now famous March on Frederiksted Town proper, which is re-enacted every year, is a source of pride for many Crucians. It was the coordinated efforts under General Buddhoe and Admiral King and the many other slaves who planned and had decided that it was freedom or else, that resulted in the Emancipation of the slaves of the DWI. When they marched into Frederiksted town, the gendarmes (the police force) had no gun powder with which to try to subdue the very large group of slaves who had now gathered. Over the time, they had slowly been putting their plan into place by slowly taking away the gun powder in the fort and disposing of it. They knew a show of force, strength and unity would be their way of attaining freedom. And they did.
Once von Scholten heard of the gathering of the slaves in Frederiksted town, he rushed to assess the situation. He arrived and saw them gathered, demanding their freedom. The gendarmes were unable to slow the growing crowd and could not be expected to keep any peace with no working guns. So he was left with only one choice.
"All Unfree in the danish westindia Islands are from today emancipated."
Today, we celebrate 176 years of Emancipation here in the former DWI, now US Virgin Islands. ~ July 3, 1848
