Walleye fishing over the last week or so has slowed down some due to the unstable weather patterns. Its been hot, its been cold its been storming etc… so many quick changes in weather really puts walleyes in a negative mood. We still managed some big ones and a few eaters each trip but overall it was one of the slower walleye bite weeks I have had this summer. Cooler nights and some stable weather should get them back on the chew soon. The smallmouth bite has been much better over the last week and it seems like they are getting into that fall feed bag mode and that bite will just keep getting better as we roll into September. Here are some pics from over the last week

Walleye fishing has been fantastic over the past week. We've been able to keep two walleyes (18-20 inches) since August 16th. About 1 in 5 walleyes caught have been keepers. We've caught our limit each trip, along with some big ones. We have fished mostly over deep rocks and transition areas in the 20-24ft depth range.

I spent most of this week in pursuit of smallmouth bass. With the hot weather and calm winds I figured the bass would be fired up and they were! We caught them in 4ft of water out to 20ft of water and everything in between. Its a crazy good smallmouth bite right now lots of doubles and lots of 19-21 inchers.

Fishing in this wind over the last few days has been challenging as it limits locations and presentations a bit. Typically the wind gets the walleye bite on the rocks going so that has been my focus the last few days. Working rock reefs in the 14-20ft depths has been best. We have had very good walleye fishing in the mornings with the bite tapering off in the late afternoon times.

This week the Walleye fishing has been good early in the morning but has been tapering off for us by lunch time. Most of the trips this week started with walleye fishing and ended with a few hours of smallmouth fishing in the afternoon when the walleye bite slowed down. Our best option for catching these walleyes has still been to use leeches and crawlers under a thill pro series float. They are on the top edge of structure early in the morning 20-24ft then slide out into the deeper water as the sun gets higher.
We are finding a lot of the 2pd variety smallmouth bass still in the 6-10ft water range with an occasional bigger one in the mix. We are catching these fish throwing ned rigs. It seems like the majority of the bigger bass are out in deeper water by big boulders in that 16-20 ft range. Drop shotting has been the best option for catching those.
