January 6th marks the transition from Christmas to Mardi Gras in Louisiana. It traditionally closes the Christmas season and commemorates the day the three wise men reached baby Jesus. That’s why decorations often stay up until this date.

It’s also the official start of Mardi Gras season, when the first King Cakes are cut and the countdown to Fat Tuesday begins.

One season ends. Another begins—and the celebrations continue.
