A few important updates from The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, Pennsylvania. First, yes, we are open regular hours today (9AM-6PM) and Saturday (9AM-3PM).

Additionally, a number of weeks ago we addressed the issue of VirusX and the hosta 'Red Ninja' https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18smfchtmF/ We did NOT sell this hosts because of the risk of it being infected with VirusX", a disease that negatively impacts hostas." Unfortunately, the initial 'Red Ninja' hostas on the market did turn out to be infected, and now, there appears to be a national campaign to sell 'Red Ninja' without certain guarantees that the current hostas are virus free. Therefore, there is a strong warning NOT to buy this hosta at this time- see the link from The American Hosta Society related to 'Red Ninja': https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BE2jEvm57/

The Hosta Hideaway believes "VirusX is something to have knowledge about, but it is not something to panic about if you buy your hostas from knowledgeable and reputable hosta nurseries such as The Hosta Hideaway. See the link about VirusX on our website https://thehostahideaway.com/?page_id=1432

So here are five recommendations to help keep your hosta garden safe and free from VirusX
1. Pay attention to hosta experts related to hostas, and do NOT be tempted to buy the hosta 'Red Ninja' under any circumstances, and until there are specific guarantees that the Red Ninja" hostas sold in the U.S. are virus free.
2. Only buy your hostas from reliable and knowledgeable hosta retailers such as The Hosta Hideaway. Additionally, know that just because a nursery is well known and respected, it does not mean they are fully knowledgeable about hostas and that they buy their hostas from reliable sources. We have seen many respectable nurseries selling diseased plants.
3. Do not assume a hosta is healthy just because It looks fine to you, as VirusX can remain unnoticeable for several years before a plant looks "sick'.
4. Do NOT be tempted to buy hostas from box stores as there is really no way to know the original source of these hostas. Box stores are a resource for the gardener, but they are NOT the place to buy hostas, regardless of the deal. Remember, a bargain is not a bargain if you infect your garden. Additionally, when a unique hosta shows up at large nurseries or box stores, be aware that it may have come from an unreliable source.
5. Be careful when dividing hostas, and make sure you clean your tools between dividing plants to reduce the risk of spreading diseases. We hope these five suggestions are helpful to keep your hosta garden healthy and disease free.

We often get asked at The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs PA why our hostas look so healthy and full. First, we have expertise and experience in growing hostas for over 40 years and we have run a successful hosta business for 19 years, only selling quality healthy plants. And we are well educated and versed on hosta issues including HVX, and we disseminate information to the public through speaking engagements, radio shows, videos, our website and through Facebook.

Second, we only buy from trusted and reliable wholesalers who test their plants and who only sell healthy disease free plants. Although there are good dig and divide operations, we do not get our plants through digging and dividing which is an easy way to potentially spread plant diseases. But in cases where our customers want plants out of our personal collection, those plants are potted and tested to provide assurance to our customers.

And finally, we absolutely do not buy bargain hostas from unreliable wholesalers, other nurseries or from box stores which is always risky, and we encourage others to develop a similar policy. And we work hard to educate the public about hosta issues, and to help local nurseries (and even wholesalers) know about hosta diseases and how to spot them. Be assured, our hostas are of the highest quality and are healthy specimens for your gardens.

The Hosta Hideaway has over 400 varieties of hostas and a great selection of statuary, fountains, benches, birdbaths, garden art, and other garden items for your landscape. Know that anytime is a good time to visit during the season, and to plant hostas, or to find that right piece of statuary or garden art for your landscape. So come for a visit and see why our customers enjoy the serene setting of our nursery and gardens, and why we have such a loyal customer base that comes far and wide each year to shop at The Hosta Hideaway.

Speaking of Hostas: And a garden water source. At The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, Pennsylvania, we understand the importance of water to the hosta garden. Although hostas are very forgiving and tend to be fairly drought resistant, they still may need watering during those times of the season when temperatures are high and rain is scarce.

But just like plants, garden wildlife needs water to survive. And the enjoyment of seeing an assortment of birds or other creatures as you walk through your gardens can almost be as exciting as enjoying all the different hostas you have planted So here are a few tips in providing a water source to support wildlife visiting your gardens.

One of the most obvious sources of water is a birdbath which can be used for birds as both a drinking source and a place to bathe. So, once you decide on a birdbath, the next step is to pick the right birdbath and then to place it in the ideal location. First, make sure the rim on the birdbath is sufficient for the bird to perch on while getting a drink, but not too wide as to prevent the bird from being able to easily land on the rim.

Additionally, make sure the birdbath is not too deep, as about one to two inches of water in the dish part of the birdbath is sufficient. And for deeper birdbaths, add some different size flat stones in the bowl so the birds can have different places to access the water. This will also give the birds a place to land and to splash and preen themselves. Additionally, placing the birdbath in a shadier area of the garden that is fairly protected, but where you can watch the bird activity is both enjoyable and helpful in encouraging usage. Birds that like birdbaths include chickadees, goldfinches, and cardinals

Another option for providing a water source is to purchase a fountain. Moving water can attract birds by the sound the water makes as it cascades and splashes in the fountain. An active water source can also help inhibit the proliferation of algae growth and insect larva in the water. Additionally, birds such as warblers, hummingbirds and buntings tend to be more attracted to fountains. And of course, the sound of a fountain adds tranquility and peace to the garden space.

Finally, adding a low lying birdbath can attract beneficial animals to the garden by providing a drinking spot that can be easily accessed by small mammals and other creatures such as turtles, frogs and toads, and ground birds such as thrushes, doves and thrashers. We hope this information is helpful in attracting wildlife to your garden.

And temember, The Hosta Hideaway has a large assortment of birdbaths and fountains for your gardens. Additionally, coming to our nursery is a unique shopping experience as we are located in a quiet and serene setting where you can meander through garden paths and pick from over 400 varieties of hostas for sale including 'Wild Imagination', 'Emperor's New Clothes' and 'Trendsetter'. This week's Featured hosta at The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs PA is ‘Trendsetter'. This medium hosta has green, heart-shaped leaves with wide yellow margins, and the edges become more creamy white as the summer progresses. This beautiful hosta has very showy variegation that is highlighted by somewhat rippled margins, giving 'Trendsetter' many interesting features to display in your hosta garden.

Because of its size, excellent coloration and interesting leaf shape, 'Trendsetter is a fantastic hosta to plant with a solid green hosta such as 'Royal Standard' or 'Royal Crest'. And adding a solid yellow hosta to this grouping such as 'August Moon' or ''Echo the Sun' would create a nice garden feature. Master hybridizer Hans Hansen created trendsetter (2019) through the cross of a streaked sport of 'Niagara Falls' x 'Empress Wu', and it blooms in early-mid summer with nice lavender flowers for an added touch of color!

So look for 'Trendsetter' and our other weekly featured hostas, along with 400 other varieties when you visit The Hosta Hideaway. And we also still have a nice selection of statuary and garden art, including benches, birdbaths, fountains, planters, and other unique garden finds.
