A few important updates from The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York Springs, Pennsylvania. First, yes, we are open regular hours today (9AM-6PM) and Saturday (9AM-3PM).
Additionally, a number of weeks ago we addressed the issue of VirusX and the hosta 'Red Ninja' https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18smfchtmF/ We did NOT sell this hosts because of the risk of it being infected with VirusX", a disease that negatively impacts hostas." Unfortunately, the initial 'Red Ninja' hostas on the market did turn out to be infected, and now, there appears to be a national campaign to sell 'Red Ninja' without certain guarantees that the current hostas are virus free. Therefore, there is a strong warning NOT to buy this hosta at this time- see the link from The American Hosta Society related to 'Red Ninja': https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BE2jEvm57/
The Hosta Hideaway believes "VirusX is something to have knowledge about, but it is not something to panic about if you buy your hostas from knowledgeable and reputable hosta nurseries such as The Hosta Hideaway. See the link about VirusX on our website https://thehostahideaway.com/?page_id=1432
So here are five recommendations to help keep your hosta garden safe and free from VirusX
1. Pay attention to hosta experts related to hostas, and do NOT be tempted to buy the hosta 'Red Ninja' under any circumstances, and until there are specific guarantees that the Red Ninja" hostas sold in the U.S. are virus free.
2. Only buy your hostas from reliable and knowledgeable hosta retailers such as The Hosta Hideaway. Additionally, know that just because a nursery is well known and respected, it does not mean they are fully knowledgeable about hostas and that they buy their hostas from reliable sources. We have seen many respectable nurseries selling diseased plants.
3. Do not assume a hosta is healthy just because It looks fine to you, as VirusX can remain unnoticeable for several years before a plant looks "sick'.
4. Do NOT be tempted to buy hostas from box stores as there is really no way to know the original source of these hostas. Box stores are a resource for the gardener, but they are NOT the place to buy hostas, regardless of the deal. Remember, a bargain is not a bargain if you infect your garden. Additionally, when a unique hosta shows up at large nurseries or box stores, be aware that it may have come from an unreliable source.
5. Be careful when dividing hostas, and make sure you clean your tools between dividing plants to reduce the risk of spreading diseases. We hope these five suggestions are helpful to keep your hosta garden healthy and disease free.
