✨ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ✨

What a privilege to wander through Dawn & Glen Lagerstedt's collection at their home studio last week. You can see the artistry from the moment you approach their driveway- the whimsical, handmade yard art leading you into a space brimming with colorful stoneware clay.

Dawn and her husband Glen are ceramic artists of Sunrise Pottery Studio in Bull Shoals. Their work showcases functional artwork made both with the potter's wheel and hand building techniques. The versatility of skill is apparent in the textures and designs that line the walls of Sunrise Pottery (and thus Lucky Star Handmade). There's heart and thoughtfulness and playfulness and depth in their work that you can feel in each unique piece.

We've got an amazing new collection of their creations in the shop, so come check them out before I buy everything for myself!

Our community has lost a true Ozark treasure!
Violet Hensley—the beloved “Whittlin’ Fiddler”—died peacefully at her home in Yellville on Friday, August 7, at the remarkable age of 109.

Born in rural Arkansas in 1916, Violet learned to play the fiddle from her father. At 15, she watched him work and made her first fiddle by hand, beginning a lifelong devotion to traditional Ozark music and craftsmanship. After setting aside her fiddle for 27 years while raising nine children, she returned to fiddling and fiddle making in the 1960s.

For more than 50 years, Violet shared her music, stories, humor, and craft with visitors to Silver Dollar City. Her talents eventually carried her across the country—from national television and the Smithsonian Institution to the Grand Ole Opry, where she made her debut at the age of 99.

Violet made more than 70 fiddles during her lifetime and was named an Arkansas Living Treasure in 2004. She was later inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame. But here in Yellville, she was more than a celebrated artist. She was our neighbor and a living connection to the traditions, stories, music, and resourcefulness of the Ozarks.

At Lucky Star Handmade, we believe that traditional arts remain alive because people take the time to learn them, practice them, and pass them along. Violet devoted her life to doing exactly that. Her hands shaped wood into instruments, her bow brought old songs to life, and her generous spirit connected generations.
We are grateful that Violet called Yellville home and that her music became part of the soundtrack of this place. Her extraordinary life reminds us that the things we make—and the traditions we share—can continue speaking long after we are gone.

Our hearts go out to Violet’s family and to all those who loved her. We hope they find comfort in knowing how deeply she was cherished and how profoundly her life touched the Ozarks and far beyond.

Rest peacefully, Violet. Your fiddle may be quiet, but your music will carry on.

We won't publicly admit that we were rooting for you Ashley Woodell, but we're thrilled to call you our art scavenger hunt winner for Wrapped Rock #4!

I went looking for a place to hide this rock, and I discovered a peaceful local spot I couldn't believe I hadn't visited before. Kelly's Slab on Crooked Creek. It's not a place you have to travel far outside of town to find, and maybe that's one of its greatest beauties. It's a spot to connect with nature even if just to get your toes wet in the afternoon or eat your lunch on the bank.

If you're new here, we'll catch you up: One of our shop artists, Mary Hall, has crafted these unique leather-woven rocks, and we're hiding them for you to find. Check in on our Facebook or Instagram pages every Friday for a new clue!

It's that time of the week! Rock #5 is out in the "wild" somewhere in Marion County...just waiting for you to discover it.

One of our shop artists, Mary Hall, has brought these unique handcrafted woven rocks to the Ozarks, and we're hiding them for you to find. 🌿

Based on the traditional Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, these woven rocks represent the beauty in impermanence, modesty, and the natural cycle of growth and decay. Mary’s as generous as she is talented, and she’s crafted and donated a few wrapped rocks for Lucky Star Handmade to offer to the community in the way of a scavenger hunt.

The best part is- FINDERS KEEPERS! Stop by Lucky Star Handmade with your found woven rock for an additional congratulatory gift. We’ll reveal a clue every Friday until it’s been located, so make sure you check in with us on Facebook and Instagram. Who knows…maybe you’ll discover another local gem on your hunt for this treasure!

Tag a friend who loves a good riddle to solve!

Clue #1, Rock #5:

One reaches skyward without a sound.
One reflects while ripples surround.
One welcomes those who stay the night.
Together, they conceal my sight.

Good luck!
