Our Poem River Series is off to a great start with first event last night, a Poetry Recital. More than 9 orators recited a chosen poem (or 2). Seats were filled, leaving standing room only, and we laughed and cried and contemplated deeply.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Play by local author Rick Donahoe.

Part love story, part thriller - this fast moving novel set in the inter-mountain Northwest follows a middle-aged establishment-type from the East who has been given one year to live and travels west to die on his own terms. Things don’t go quite as he planned.

Jonathan Platt.of StoryChain and Savannah Brantley of Tesseract Books discussed the short story “Recitatif,” by Toni Morrison, on Saturday, March 21. Audience members heard a synopsis and analysis of the story by Ms. Brantley, followed by a recording of incarcerated women reading the beginning of the story. Mr. Platt also shared several other examples of StoryChain’s work, including a recording of two incarcerated dads reading a very funny children’s story “We are in a Book!” by Mo Willems, complete with sound effects. StoryChain creates the recordings with the incarcerated parents, then gives the recordings (on an MP3 players) to the children, with the books. A wonderful event for a great cause!
