Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism―Understanding the Social Science of Cult Influence

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join—and more importantly, stay in—extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has . . .

Our culture tends to provide pretty flimsy answers to questions of cult influence, mostly having to do with vague talk of “brainwashing.” But the true answer has nothing to do with freaky mind-control wizardry or Kool-Aid. In Cultish, Montell argues that the key to manufacturing intense ideology, community, and us/them attitudes all comes down to language. In both positive ways and shadowy ones, cultish language is something we hear—and are influenced by—every single day.

Through juicy storytelling and cutting original research, Montell exposes the verbal elements that make a wide spectrum of communities “cultish,” revealing how they affect followers of groups as notorious as Heaven’s Gate, but also how they pervade our modern start-ups, Peloton leaderboards, and Instagram feeds. Incisive and darkly funny, this enrapturing take on the curious social science of power and belief will make you hear the fanatical language of “cultish” everywhere.

"She said was a fascinating, insightful and eye-opening story of investigative journalism in the bones of the Movement, giving a voice to women who have refused to stay silent against a man who used his power to assault and bend those women. "

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists who broke the news of Harvey Weinstein's sexual harassment and abuse for the New York Times, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, the thrilling untold story of their investigation and its consequences for the movement
For years, reporters had tried to get to the truth about Harvey Weinstein's treatment of women. Rumors of wrongdoing had long circulated, and in 2017, when Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey began their investigation for the New York Times, his name was still synonymous with power. But during months of confidential interviews with actresses, former Weinstein employees, and other sources, many disturbing and long-buried allegations were unearthed, and a web of onerous secret payouts and nondisclosure agreements was revealed. When Kantor and Twohey were finally able to convince sources to go on the record, a dramatic final showdown between Weinstein and the New York Times was set in motion.
In the tradition of great investigative journalism, She Said tells a thrilling story about the power of truth and reveals the inspiring and affecting journeys of the women who spoke up--for the sake of other women, for future generations, and for themselves.

In the House in the Dark of the Woods
In this horror story set in colonial New England, a law-abiding Puritan woman goes missing. Or perhaps she has fled or abandoned her family. Or perhaps she's been kidnapped, and set loose to wander in the dense woods of the north. Alone and possibly lost, she meets another woman in the forest. Then everything changes.

The Grip of It
Touring their prospective suburban home, Julie and James are stopped by a noise. Deep and vibrating, like throat singing. Ancient, husky, and rasping, but underwater. "That's just the house settling," the real estate agent assures them with a smile. He is wrong.
The move--prompted by James's penchant for gambling and his general inability to keep his impulses in check--is quick and seamless; both Julie and James are happy to start afresh. But this house, which sits between a lake and a forest, has its own plans for the unsuspecting couple. As Julie and James try to establish a sense of normalcy, the home and its surrounding terrain become the locus of increasingly strange happenings. The framework-- claustrophobic, riddled with hidden rooms within rooms--becomes unrecognizable, decaying before their eyes. Stains are animated on the wall--contracting, expanding--and map themselves onto Julie's body in the form of painful, grisly bruises.
Like the house that torments the troubled married couple living within its walls, The Grip of It oozes with palpable terror and skin-prickling dread. Its architect, Jac Jemc, meticulously traces Julie and James's unsettling journey through the depths of their new home as they fight to free themselves from its crushing grip.

SIGNED BOOK ALERT 📣

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nicole Blanchard comes a new Beauty and the Beast retelling / dragon shifter romantasy!

Elena Darkmoore was born to rule, destined to wear the crown that now sits on someone else’s head. Stripped of her title and exiled in shame for a flaw beyond her control, she’s spent years hidden in the shadows, longing for the chance to prove she’s more than the kingdom’s forgotten disgrace.

When her father’s life hangs in the balance, Elena is given a choice: marry the ruthless Dragon Lord, Rhysander Blaque, or watch her family’s legacy crumble. They say he’s a beast who murdered his first wife, a man with fire in his veins and ice in his heart. To him, Elena is just a pawn—royal blood to break the ancient curse that haunts his clan.

But Elena has never been one to bow quietly. Risking everything is nothing new, and she’ll do whatever it takes to reclaim her honor—even if it means binding herself to a dragon. Yet as deadly betrayals close in and the line between enemy and ally blurs, Elena finds herself in more danger than she ever imagined.

This time, it’s not just her crown she stands to lose—it’s her heart. And surrendering might be the only way to survive.

SIGNED BOOK ALERT

If given the choice between dragons and men, I would choose the dragon every time.

Cast out and forgotten after becoming an unseer, Princess Asha’s life changes when she inherits three long-lost dragon eggs—making her the most dangerous woman in the empire. To uncover their secrets, she must join forces with a rival prince who wants the eggs… and her.

Princess Asha has always defied the brutal expectations of her warrior empire. When a life-altering injury shatters her vision and her future in the Ujuima military, she’s cast into the dragon pits.

Her world is further upended when she inherits three dragon eggs. Dragon eggs have not been seen in centuries, making Asha's possession of them dangerous. In a desperate attempt to unravel the secrets of the eggs, she joins forces with Adriel, a prince from another kingdom who also desires the dragon eggs for his own purposes.

As they journey together, Asha forms an unlikely connection with Drakkar, a dragon who holds the key to locating other dragons in the northern mountains. In a world where worth is determined by how well one fits into society’s narrow mold, Asha faces a pivotal choice: Embrace the power that lies within her, or yield to what others believe she can or cannot become?
