We’ve been asked many times how we got started in the resale business. We really had no experience and no idea what we were doing, but Dan had lost his job in sales while we were pregnant with our 6th child. After becoming unemployed, he started going to thrift stores to find books to sell online, and eventually started going to storage unit auctions to find more things to sell online, to help make ends meet with such a large family.
After bringing home several storage units--you can imagine what that looked like piled in corners of our house--we decided to begin looking for a location to start a brick-and-mortar store. Carrie worked on the nuts and bolts of getting a business started while Dan continued gathering inventory, and it wasn’t long before a “wrong” turn while heading to the post office in Wooster brought Carrie past what was to become our first location at 149 N. Walnut St. The building owners were great and were willing to work with us to let us start moving inventory there in February 2012.
We worked frantically to get everything organized, cleaned, and priced while acquiring whatever display shelving we could find at low prices. We opened our doors in late March 2012--on Grand Opening day, neither of us had ever used a cash register before! We muddled through it and did our best to adjust to having to be at a physical location 6 days a week with children ranging from 1.5 years to 12 years old.
Eventually we felt we were outgrowing that location and began hunting for a spot downtown to buy rather than lease. We found 328 E. Liberty, which had been Critters Pet Shop but had been vacant for quite a while. By the end of 2014, we worked out the details with the owners and bought the building. It needed quite a bit of work before it would be ready for use, so we got started. We did as much as possible ourselves but there were several major items that we couldn’t do, including the roof. By October 2015, those projects were completed. We began transferring inventory and the monumental task of actually moving everything took place in November. We wanted to be open by Window Wonderland, so we closed up shop at the old location at the end of the day on Saturday and for 5 days worked almost nonstop to get everything ready in time for that Friday.
