Greenwald Antiques We are a family-owned and operated antique shop founded by June and Larry Greenwald in 1959, born out of their love of art, collecting, and history.

That love and enthusiasm was passed down to their son, Ron, who currently owns and operates the company.

What an unforgettable weekend. Thank you to everyone who attended our Warren Estate Sale your kindness & genuine appreciation for the pieces made all this work worth it.
 
A heartfelt thank you as well to the incredible team & friends who helped prepare, stage, research, carry, polish, photograph, label (and re-label!) every corner of this extraordinary home. Because of your dedication, this became the most successful sale of my career; something I will never forget.
 
And, most especially, thank you to the wonderful family whose estate we were honoured to present. Your trust and hospitality made this experience truly special.
 
And, since I’m in a grateful mood, thank you to the weather for holding the rain until we were almost done on Sunday. Perfect timing.

Victorian Black and Polychrome-Painted Secretaire Bookcase
England, second half of the 19th century
Painted and ebonised wood, glass; 85 in. high × 34½ in. wide × 22½ in. deep
In close proximity to a Ralph Lauren wingback down-filled settee and pillows in a wool tartan upholstery decorated with ridding gear.
This tall and richly decorated secretaire bookcase embodies the Victorian love of colour, narrative, and craftsmanship. The black ground is enlivened by hand-painted panels depicting equestrian and street scenes nostalgic visions of English life that balance refinement with rustic charm. The fall-front writing surface conceals drawers and compartments for correspondence, while the upper glazed section provides space for the display of trophies, pictures, and other prized possessions.
  
The piece retains two working keys, preserving both its function and its 19th-century character.
 
One can find similarly decorated examples in museum and historic-house collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Museum of the Home/ Geffrey, and from the National Trust: Shaw’s Corner in Hertfordshire, and Ickworth in Suffolk.
