Carménère is an old grape variety from the Gironde. DNA analysis suggests it’s a cross between Cabernet Franc and Gros Cabernet. You’ll find herbaceous notes like tomato and pepper evolving into young, tight bunches of fresh berry fruits. Increased levels of ripeness bring dark, moist clumps of blackberry and blueberry to the palate in tandem with coffee and dark chocolate notes. Reportedly pairs well will turkey. Just ask this guy.

Michelangelo Buonarotti’s Handwritten Grocery List, written on the back of an envelope dated 1518.

He used pictograms to help his servant, who could not read words.

Pictured: bowls of fennel soup, herring, bowls of sal*d and anchovies, tortelli (a stuffed pasta), and bread (drawn as circles).

Most notably: “un bocal di vino”
expressed in the image of a carafe.

History and modernity meet in Penedès, Catalonia, Spain with the Azimut Brisat: This skin contact, OKA orange wine is fully organic, totally naturally, and completely transcendent on a late summer day just after you’ve ducked a hurricane on the Long Island Sound. Drink it out of a DENK’ART glass or an old piece of Corningware — it’s delicious where’r it pours.

Ferragosto is an Italian holiday first established in 18 B.C. by the Roman Emperor Augustus to give workers a greatly deserved day of rest after toiling in oppressively hot fields for months.

The annual celebration has continued apace for over two-thousand years. Grazie, Augustus. Salute!

In praise of …

Just two percent of the earth’s surface boasts a Mediterranean climate. Combined with the geologic melting pot that is the Napa Valley floor, magic happens.

We’ve all known it for decades, which is why Napa Cabernet so often fetches a high price.

It’s a scarce resource in high demand.

But with on the horizon, these are worth the splurge.

Experience dark blackberry and rich plum fruit on the nose with pleasant earthiness and light herbal notes.

Round and full of rich fruit on the palate, you’ll find blackberry syrup flavors and notes of dried fig, clove and licorice.

It’s elegant and smooth as silk in the mouth with black currant and black cherry fruit leading to the finish.

Pleasant warming spice and some drying leather notes are icing

on the cake.
