History of Walleyes Unlimited of Montana: In 1983, after several conversations with warm water anglers, east of the divide, one fact became very apparent: anglers were frustrated and concerned enough to do something about walleye and other warm water species that could not only survive but would thrive through the enhancement and proper management of warmwater fisheries. When Walleyes Unlimited st
arted, 2500 spottail shiners were the total sum of forage fish programs in Montana. There were no state operated fish hatcheries capable of raising warm water fish. There were very few positive actions taken by anglers or Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) to develop the tremendous potential that exists numerous reservoirs in the state of Montana. Today, Walleyes Unlimited of Montana (WUM) is one of the larges sport fishing organizations in Montana with over 3500 members. It was formed and incorporated in 1983 to inform and educate the public about the importance of warm water sport fishing in Montana and to suport building and maintaining suitable warm water fish hatcheries and develop a hatchery program which can accomodate the needs of warm water fishing. Several state walleye tournaments require that you be a member of WUM to fish these tournaments in order to participate. WUM has no management authority in any of these tournaments; they are administered by a totally separate board of directors. WUM is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational, and/or scientific purposes or to foster national or international sports competition under section 501 (c) (3) of the internal Revenue code.
