Orin is a staple here at The Rainbow Roost. He closely resembles Onagadori. This fall we will be putting him with a handful of hens so that we can continue to propagate his genetics. There is already a wait-list for eggs and his offsprings for next year. If anyone is interested, feel free to follow along and be on the lookout for availability posts.

If you know anything about Onagadori in the U.S., you know that there is drama! The correct leg color has been a hot topic for many years. You will often see birds resembling an Onagadori, but with slate (blue) legs. The correct colors are willow (green) and yellow.

We have been working diligently to correct the leg colors on our birds. It'll be an ongoing process that will take numerous years to phase out. Here's a look at two hens with willow legs.

What are your thoughts? Should the leg color dictate whether a chicken is an Onagadori or not?

Meet Santos. His mother, Ash, is a Satsumadori. His father? We don't know. Regardless, he's a pretty yard ornament that comingles with the rest of the longtails.

Today we did our annual blood collection for CAE (Caprine Arthritis-Encephalitis) or SRLV (Small Ruminant Lentivirus). Halloweena was very nervous so we had to also put her mom, Valentina, on the stand with her for moral support. Lol. Both girlies did great ❤️

Fingers crossed all tests come back negative! 🤞🏽

*Sigh* some chickens have the survival instincts of a fart. Rather than laying eggs in the nesting boxes, this hen had chosen the patio and planters 🙄 I do appreciate the rooster providing moral support as she paced around to find the perfect spot.
