Here are more pictures from our trip. We left on 6/1 and drove to Thompson - Rogers Wayside Park in Manistique, MI. Tuesday we drove to Crisp Point. We wanted to get there so we could get some training in before they left. Our volunteer shift was 6/3-6/26.
We add an added attraction for the weekend. On May 27th a sailboat was heading to his boat slip. At one point his electronics went out for navigation. His gas gauge was stuck also. He tapped it and was at 1/4 of a tank. He put out his sails to continue his journey. He thought he was going into a harbor but was already past it. He did manage to hit rocks at Crisp Point, put a hole in the hull and ran ashore. The boat is being scrapped Monday.
The weather was beautiful but the mosquitoes were horrible. It was like looking through a screen they were so thick. Mosquitos spray and the head nets were big sellers. Saturday was windy, damp, foggy and cold. We sold lots of hoodies, hats and sweatpants.
And guess what happened when T.O. was showing the next family how to close the lighthouse. Yes, it really happened! They locked a few people inside. Only for a few minutes, but long enough to make one guy unhappy. I guess it could have been worse.

So now back to reality! Looking forward to our June garage sale Father’s Day weekend. Thursday, June 18th - Saturday, June 20th 8am-5pm!

So, what would you do after a few days in the UP. Yes, that’s right! You stop at Bits and Pallets in Appleton for a pallet! 😂😂😂
Why? Because cleaning and putting your stuff away and cleaning the camper aren’t enough. Let’s also process a pallet. Nice variety but it seems like everything will need to be checked!

And so it begins! We are heading to the UP.

We went there rockhounding and fell in love with the serenity and beauty.

The lighthouse, visitor center and gift shop are kept by volunteers. So we joined the historical society so we could volunteer!

Crisp Point Lighthouse is a historic, remote lighthouse on Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, known for its challenging access via a long, unpaved road and its location on the "Shipwreck Coast". Built in 1904, it was deactivated in 1993 but reactivated seasonally in 2013, with a visitor center and tower open in warmer months for those who make the rugged journey. The site offers spectacular views, a chance to climb the tower, and a glimpse into maritime history, though visitors should be prepared for a slow, rough drive and limited amenities.

Key Features & History
Construction: The lighthouse was built in 1903-1904 and became operational on May 5, 1904, to aid ships on the treacherous Lake Superior.
Name Origin: It was named after Christopher Crisp, the second keeper of the lifesaving station at the site.
Deactivation & Reactivation: Decommissioned in 1993, a new LED light was installed in 2012, and the light was reactivated seasonally in 2013.
"Shipwreck Coast": The area is infamous for shipwrecks, including the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank nearby.

Visiting the Lighthouse
Access: Reaching it requires driving about 18 miles down a rough, unpaved road (County Road 412) that transitions from gravel to dirt and sand; an AWD/4WD vehicle is recommended.
Navigation: GPS is unreliable; follow the signs from M-123.
Amenities: A visitor center with restrooms and a gift shop is available, but it's wise to bring water and bug spray.

Activities: Visitors can explore the grounds, climb the tower for panoramic views, and learn about the area's history.
Seasonality: The tower and visitor center are typically open from spring through fall; the grounds are accessible year-round.

It our first time as keepers. We are looking forward to be welcoming to visitors. It is truly an honor to keep history alive.
