February 2026 Central Florida Cold Front Bass Fishing:

Bass fishing on the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes in February 2026—specifically after a cold front—presents a unique challenge. Florida-strain largemouth bass are notoriously sensitive to temperature drops; their metabolism slows significantly, and they often become "locked" into heavy cover.

As of late January/early February 2026, water temperatures in the South Chain have been hovering between 61*-63*. This last strong cold front can quickly drop surface temps into the high 50s, which usually makes the bite tougher unless you know what to do.

The last major front presented us with a thermocline in most lakes that hovered around 4ft below the surface and this front on 02/01-02/02 will most likely push it down to the 6ft depth range. This is caused by the surface temp being 58*-60* while the deep springs are still bringing a fresh supply of 64*-65* degree water.

That being said, a slower presentation over deeper grass that is below the 6ft range is essential for a successful day. Fishing smaller 4” Z-Man Jerk Shads (in natural shad colors) on a 1/8oz 3/0 EWG belly weighted hook or very slow rolling a 3/16oz Speed Worm in watermelon red flake are two of the best techniques for artificial baits.

For those who prefer shiners make sure you have light 10lb mono is black or smoke green spooled up and use a 1/8oz tungsten weight above a swivel about 8”-10” above your smaller 1/0 circle or kahle hook. Using shiners that are between 2.5”-4” in your best bet, and don’t think that “Big Mama” won’t eat a smaller shiner here, that’s the size of the bait she’s used to in these lakes. Use smaller floats 5’-6’ above the bait and slow down your troll to let the bait stay down in “the zone” as much as possible.

Dreaming of bending a rod in January while the rest of the country freezes? Central Florida is calling your name! This time of year offers some fantastic bass fishing opportunities, with cooler temperatures invigorating both anglers and largemouth alike.
While cold fronts can temporarily slow things down, the mild Florida winter often means consistent action. Bass tend to congregate in predictable areas as water temperatures dip, making them easier to target. Focus your efforts on deeper edges of hydrilla and other submerged vegetation, as well as canals and creek channels connected to the main lakes. These areas offer both warmer water sanctuary and ambush points for baitfish.
Live shiners are always a top producer, especially when the bite is tough. However, artificial lures can be incredibly effective too. Slow-rolling spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and even jerkbaits can entice strikes from sluggish but hungry bass. Don't be afraid to work your lures slowly; a deliberate presentation can often be the key to triggering a bite.
From the renowned Kissimmee Chain to the multiple lakes of the Winter Haven South Chain, Central Florida in January is a bass angler's paradise. So, pack your bags, grab your gear, and escape the winter blues for some thrilling largemouth action!
