Shortly after the Rangers scaled Pointe Du Hoc, the first assault waves landed at Omaha and Utah beaches. In all, there were approximately 56,000 soldiers involved in the initial stages of the landings. The majority of these soldiers belonged to the 1st, 4th and 29th Infantry Divisions.

In the early morning hours of June 6th 1944, 225 men of the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the vertical cliffs at Pointe Du Hoc on the Normandy coast of France. This strategic piece of land is situated between the two American invasion beaches, Omaha and Utah. Aerial photos had revealed a German artillery battery situated on top.
