Some of you have already heard, but I wanted to let the A Galaxy Called Dallas community know that we lost Thomas Chick the other night. According to his sister on his Facebook profile, he was battling heart and kidney problems along with an infection.

I'm at a loss for what to say. Though we hadn't talked to each other much, except for the occasional message, and the fact that I now lived an hour and a half east of Dallas, I still considered him a friend. I got to see him and some of the gang when I went back to Dallas for his mom's funeral in '23.

I met Thomas and Les sometime in 2011 when my wife and I had moved to the Garland area from Lewisville. I was looking for a comic shop in the area and found Comic Book Kraze, and also found a community. I joined the sci-fi group that met there, started running with Thomas and Les Webster, and when I opened the shop, hired him as my manager.

Thomas was my right-hand man. He was there when I needed him, covered the shop for me when I had my hospital stay in 2017, and helped shape the store and its community. I couldn't have asked for anyone better for that position. His comic book knowledge was exceptional. His love of the geek is on display with A Fellowship of the Geek, a podcast he co-created.

I, and the geek community, have lost a friend, but he will be remembered.

RIP Thomas.

On a lighter note, today is also Star Wars Day, which commemorates the opening day of the original Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977, and Towel Day, which celebrates Douglas Adams, the writer of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series in which we learn that a towel is "the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have."

Celebrate accordingly.
