1956 – Randy Jackson is born: musician, producer, longtime American Idol judge, and owner of one of television’s most recognizable “Yo, dawg”s.

1957 – Frances McDormand is born: Oscar-winning actress known for fierce intelligence, unforgettable characters, and zero interest in Hollywood nonsense.

1972 – Title IX is signed into U.S. law, dramatically expanding opportunities for women and girls in education and sports.

1993 – Sleepless in Seattle premieres, helping permanently convince America that bookstores and airports are deeply romantic places.

The committee has recently observed that many visitors enter the establishment and immediately ask: “Is it all right if I look around a bit?”

Jane finds this question deeply considerate. Margot believes the question to be puzzling, as the answer appears self-evident.

Victoria Worthington considers it difficult to imagine opening an entire shop devoted to secondhand treasure and then objecting to having guests browse.

Nevertheless, the question continues to arise with surprising frequency.

Jane reports that the proprietor invariably responds with great enthusiasm and encourages visitors to take their time.

Margot has further observed that those who begin by “just looking around” frequently remain considerably longer than anticipated.

Victoria Worthington believes this is because the establishment contains what she describes as layers. “One does not simply glance at a place such as this,” she observed. “Proper investigation requires time.”

Jane agrees and has noted that visitors frequently arrive seeking one thing and leave carrying something else entirely. Margot reports that visitors who do this often appear delighted with their purchases.

Jane believes this may simply be the nature of treasure hunting.

The proprietor has also reportedly remarked that one of the loveliest things a visitor can say is: “Thank you for letting me browse your delightful shop.”

Jane considers this an extremely gracious sentiment.

Victoria Worthington believes civilized people should always express appreciation when permitted to wander among treasures.

The committee therefore wishes to state, for the record, that visitors are not only permitted to look around, but warmly encouraged to do so.
