It's. Freaking. Hot. Outsiiiiiiiide. 🥵
Cycling in the summer is a blast, but it’s still exercise, and exercising in the heat comes with risks. Here are some tips to keep you safe and comfortable:
☀️ Stay Hydrated:
Don’t underestimate how much you sweat while biking. Always replenish fluids to avoid heat stroke and exhaustion. NEVER start a ride dehydrated.
☀️ Optimal Ride Times:
Ride early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler, even on the hottest days.
☀️ Cool Clothing:
Wear short-sleeved, breathable, and quick-dry clothing (look for dry-wick or sweat-wicking labels). Protect your eyes and skin with UV-filtering sunglasses and sunscreen. Fingerless cycling gloves can help maintain grip with sweaty palms. Bring a change of clothes or a small towel if you’re worried about staying in sweaty gear.
☀️ Travel Light:
Carry your belongings on your bike, not your body. Watch your tire pressure. As temperatures rise, so does tire pressure. Use slightly lower tire inflation to prevent flats on hot pavement.
☀️ Plan Your Route:
Choose shaded paths and note where public restrooms and drinking fountains are located. Parks and trails usually have these facilities. Know where nearby gas stations and convenience stores are for drink stops.
☀️ Emergency Preparedness:
No ride is 100% predictable. Carry essentials like water, money, and a phone in case you get stranded. If possible, bring basic bike tools for roadside repairs.
☀️ Shade Parking:
Find shade to park your bike. Black saddles can get very hot in the sun, and a cooler saddle is much more comfortable to hop on.
Stay cool and enjoy your summer rides!
