Throwback Thursday: Built on Determination
Growing up in the late 1800s, John “Jno.” Solenberger faced challenges most of us can hardly imagine. Stricken with polio as a child, he relied on a crutch to walk at a time when there were few accommodations, limited medical treatment, and little understanding of what people with disabilities could achieve.
For a young man raised in a farming family, that reality could have defined his future. Farm life depended on physical labor, and the traditional path before him seemed out of reach.
But Jno. chose to focus on what he could do.
He developed a deep knowledge of farm implements, wagons, and the mechanics behind them. He studied the products farmers relied on, learned how they worked, and discovered a different way to serve the agricultural community he loved.
That knowledge, combined with determination and vision, became the foundation for something much bigger.
In 1888, at just 26 years old, Jno. and his partner founded Solenberger & Stouffer.
What began with a young man, a crutch, and a willingness to forge his own path grew into a business that would endure for generations.
Over the years, the company survived fires, economic hardships, changing technology, and a rapidly evolving community. From its first location at Cameron and Baker Streets to our home on Berryville Avenue today, Solenberger’s has continued to grow while staying true to the principle Jno. understood from the very beginning: find a way to serve your community.
Five generations later, the business he helped build is still here.
Jno.’s story isn’t about being defined by a disability. It’s about refusing to let limitations define what is possible.
He could have focused on what he couldn’t do.
Instead, he focused on what he could.
He learned. He adapted. He built.
And 138 years later, the legacy he created continues to serve Wi******er and the surrounding region.
Sometimes the road we expect isn’t the road we travel. Jno. Solenberger found a different path, and built a legacy along the way.
