These days, a plethora of information on witchcraft, paganism & many spiritual practices can be easily found via the internet, social media & books. Recently, it’s become more common to find most of our materials & supplies in even the most mainstream of shops – now more accessible to people from all walks of life and budgets. However, sadly we still live in a world where not everyone is able to practice witchcraft or follow their chosen path in life openly. For any number of reasons, a practitioner may need to keep their path a secret – we refer to them as ‘closeted’ witches.

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭.

Thankfully, with some creativity & careful planning, it is still possible to find ways in which you can practice without risking detection. It’s possible to even find ways to hide out tools and other materials within other interests, and quite literally in plain sight.

𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬:
◽ Colors of red, white, gold, silver, and green.
◽ Evergreens such as cedar, juniper, birch, or pine.
◽ Symbols of winter, such as fake snow, icicles, berries, or bells.
◽ If crystals don’t raise a flag, using Ruby, Garnet, or Snowflake Quartz.
◽ Similarly, if incense also doesn’t raise a flag, burn cinnamon, frankincense, sage, myrrh, or clove.
◽ Using cinnamon sticks, cloves, or allspice around your space disguised as potpourri.

𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬:
◽ Buy or make a wreath for your home.
◽ Cleanse your space by cleaning and tidying up.
◽ Take some time to sit in the sunlight.
◽ Light a candle.
◽ Baking or cooking to utilize that kitchen witch magick.
◽ Creating a ‘Wish Jar’ or ‘Wish Pinecone’. Either is a fun & family-friendly way to set intentions for the coming New Year.
◽ Banishing of limiting beliefs that prevent us from pursuing our potential – write everything down on paper that you wish to release before the New Year, burn it if able, otherwise just rip into tiny pieces, and bury into the earth.
◽ Enjoy a hot beverage to bless the season with beauty, magick, & warmth & take some time in quiet reflection.
◽ Being a witch isn’t just about the magick and spells. We must also try to be conscious of our impact on Gaia herself. So, create home-made gifts, use recycled fabric for gift wrapping, or even put timers on your lights to conserve electricity.

While the depiction of this event can vary depending on the geographical region, the idea remains the same – a ghostlike leader, accompanied by a horde of warriors and creatures as they blaze through our skies with thunder and lightning… ‘hunting’ their prey.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭 – also known as Åsgårdsreien – is a peculiar event that comes from deep within the lores of northern and western Europe. Now, in Scandinavian and Norse culture, this is a popular occurrence due to the role of the Wild Hunts leader: Odin. Among his many jobs, Odin is also associated with death. While he is not the ruler of the Norse Underworld, he has the ability to choose half of the deceased warriors that enter the Norse realm, giving them the ability to sit and feast with him in Valhalla. The Norse revered and respected their dead, but especially those who fell in battle.

Interestingly enough… There have been times when even living people could join the Wild Hunt! Quite the rare occurrence, but it usually takes place when the individual is in a deep sleep – you would essentially astral project and leave your body to join the dark legions. You had to be pretty good at magic to get to this state though.

The purpose of the Wild Hunt is a little uncertain, but it’s a way for the living and the dead to interact between the veils. So, should you be walking home late at night after your Yule activities… beware the sound of horns, hounds, and hooves. If the Wild Hunt catches you, you’re in for the ride of your life.

In light of this last month of 2022, we thought we would take a moment to talk about the Pagan holiday called 𝐘 𝐮 𝐥 𝐞.

This holiday occurs on the day of the Winter Solstice – which falls on December 21st in the Northern hemisphere this year, and will continue until January 1st.

First of all, what in heathenry is ‘𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦’? Well, this refers to a period during the year when the sun reaches its maximum or minimum destination. Yuletide or Yule takes place on the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

As a celebration of the Sun, the crucial component of any Yule traditions is light – candles, bonfires, and anything that brings warmth back into our lives. This is a great time for home magick, personal magick, family quality time, and most of all, celebration. Short days of work and long nights of dreaming. At this time, we set intentions, make new plans, and appreciate our work of the seasons before this.

Yule is one of the oldest Winter Solstice festivals, dating back to the ancient Norse from thousands of years ago. However, this became another name for Christmas around the 9th century. Throughout the 10th century, during the reign of King Haakion Haraldsson, it was declared that both Yule and Christmas would be celebrated simultaneously – until eventually Christmas overtook Yule altogether.
Many traditional symbols of Yule can be seen during the Christmas holidays, such as decorating a tree for the home as well as using holly, ivy, and mistletoe. Even things like Santa Claus, reindeer, and gifting presents are linked to those Pagan roots!
