Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell in the clock tower at the north end of London’s Palace of Westminster, though the name now often refers to the clock and tower as well.

The bell weighs nearly 14 tons, each clock face is 23 feet wide, and the tower stands 316 feet tall. It became operational on September 7, 1859, and is one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

The clock is wound three times a week, and pennies are added or removed from the pendulum to keep accurate time.
