I made a style dome box. The Alamo Woodturner's Association is a supporting chapter of the Southwest Association of Woodturner's commonly called SWAT. Every year we are asked to make decorations for the Saturday night meal during the symposium. This year they want boxes. So at our guild meeting last Thursday I was given 7 boxes from two of our members to bring up for SWAT, shown in the last photo. I showed them to Tawney and she really liked the shape of the two boxes made in the style that Benoit made famous. I met him in 2018 at the Utah State symposium I had seen him demo this box, but completely forgot how he did it. So I found a demo on YouTube in French. I may not have understood what he said, but it had great camera work of how he was making all of the cuts. So yesterday I had some fun playing with a piece of Spalted Pecan that I was going to make a box out of anyway. The shape really shows off the grain of the wood. The second photo shows the inside of the lid. I got it a little thin up near the top of the dome. Fun box and one I will work on again.

Six years ago today I had a table saw accident that led to having what is called a ray amputation of my left index finger. The damage was too great to attach the part of my finger that was cut off. I will say in general I have adapted well. I can do most everything I could do before my accident. Few people notice unless I point it out. I own a now and as I showed earlier this year when I nicked the blade with a finger they work very well at saving body parts that come in contact with a table saw. Accidents happen so fast, I was using push sticks when this happened. You just don't know, so be safe as you can in the shop.

Today I demoed this for at the store in San Antonio. This was a "stump the chump" challenge. They gave me 2 pieces of figured Maple and asked for a lidded box. The base was 7"x3" and the lid was a 6"x2" blank so I chose to do an in-fitting lid. As I trued up the base I was inspired by Dublin Viking Bowl thinking it would show off the figure well. I had a great time making a fun piece.

This is the state of my laptop after my IRD for last night. I demoed this Top and Launcher in white oak, and was asked at the end to show a "normal" top (last photo).

My design was inspired by .kanne from a YouTube video he put out in 2024. I made the one with the red string in the background then. I showed it to some guild members then and was asked to demo it at the next meeting.

I am able to do IRD's now. If your club is looking for someone new to demo please DM me and I can share the list of demos I do.

These are Navajo style fiber spindles that I just finished. Tawney has taken up weaving and found a vintage four shaft loom and after speaking to the lady that had it she bartered my skills for the loom. The shafts are 30" long and the whorls are Purpleheart, Mccasser ebony, Texas Mesquite, Black Walnut, Cherry. It has been an interesting challenge getting these made turning a 30" shaft at 1/2" thick. I hope she enjoys using them, and I look forward to seeing what they make.

A few months ago I was contacted about making a special kind of needle threader. It only had 1 blade in it but it was a solid metal blade needle threader and not a wire base one. As I am always one for a fun challenge I decided to take up the task. Needless to say, I have a new product to offer the stitching community. This double ended needle threader has both the small and large size threaders. Woods featured in the first photo are Zebra wood, Brownheart, Sirari Rosewood, Arizona Ash, Katalox, Texas Mesquite, Mccasser Ebony, and Tequila Sunrise SpectraPly. If you are interested drop me a direct Message.

First this is not my work. Before our guild meeting tonight I was handed a piece of history. had visited the Alamo Woodturner's Association back in 2005, and made this top as a warm up for the demo he did. One of our members gave it to me today. I have rarely had such an honor. I believe this is made from Texas Mesquite. Now I need to get a string and see if I can get it to spin.

On Saturday I helped with a pecan log that his chainsaw couldn't handle. At the end of the day I took 3 chucks of wood. I got this 5 piece nested bow set out of this chunk today. The photos show the process in reverse. The finished set in the first. The second shows the layout for coring. The third and forth show the outside of the bowl. The fifth shows the pile of shavings I got just from the outside. The sixth is the piece I got on the lathe. In the seventh photo I was cutting off the corners with a chainsaw. The last photo shows the log we started with. The base was over 30" across.

I was looking through my wood stock pile for maple from a special tree I pulled out some sycamore. It was 10" wide by 14" long. So I brought it into the shop to see what I could salvage from it. I cut the 2 larger bowls last November when I first processed the log. The boxes I made last week getting ready for a fiber festival we are doing next weekend.

Now the boxes with the k***s were made from the wood that came from the center of the log from either side of the pitch. It gives the grain the quarter sawn orientation. It offers a striking pattern compared to the rif sawn logs.

If you have ever wondered how sensitive the trigger on the are here is proof they work. I was processing wood to usable turning blank and was switching from a rip cut to a cross cut. There was a buildup of sawdust on the table top and I went to brush it off. In the process the tip of my finger was nicked by the blade. Now my finger has some decent calluses so I didn't even feel the contact of the blade. The "pop" of the break engaging was so quick it was truly impressive.

Though I doubt I would have had any serious injury, meaning I would have to see a doctor, if this had been any other table saw, it lets me realize that I would still have my left index finger had I purchased this saw when I got the Ridgid table saw.

First photo shows the nick on my finger tip, second photo shows the blade embedded in the brake. I hadn't changed the blade in a while so it forced me to clean out the saw cabinet which will help with the sawdust build up.
