May is National Bike Month - a national celebration held each year to promote the health, environmental, and community benefits of riding a bike. May is also the month that saw Chris and I - 30 years ago - set out on a cross-country bicycle ride. Several friends gathered on May 1st, 1996 to watch us ride out of our driveway in Santa Barbara on the first day of a 3700 mile journey. That trip changed our lives and gave me a life-long appreciation for the joys of moving under the power of my own legs and lungs.

So it’s especially disturbing that our City Council has chosen this month to form an ad-hoc committee to address the potential removal of the bike lanes on Main Street directly in front of The Book Juggler. The reasons being given are lack of parking and under utilization. While there are definitely more cars on Main Street than bikes, not a day goes by that we don’t see cyclists using the bike lanes. And now with gas prices higher than ever, we’re seeing more cyclists, not fewer. And not a day goes by that we don't look out on to Main Street and see available parking spaces.

We also, every day, see motorists driving too fast on Main Street and using the bike lanes as passing lanes, endangering pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists. Excessive speed makes everyone less safe and makes pedestrians more fearful about crossing the street, which is definitely not great for our downtown businesses.

For these reasons, and more, we strongly oppose the removal of the bike lanes. We encourage all who share this view to contact the city council to request that our limited tax dollars NOT be used to remove a traffic calming measure that increases safety in our downtown.

Thanks for reading!

We’re having too much fun at the bookstore today - checking used puzzles to be sure all the pieces are there for you. It’s a tough job, but Summer’s got to do it!

The irony of posting this on our feed isn't lost on us. But the meat of this piece resonates. We're seeing more and more young people choosing books, LPs (they call them "vinyls", which we're learning to find endearing), DVDs, CDs, and even cassettes. They talk about the joy of "holding an actual thing", of appreciating cover art and liner notes, of seeing a movie as it first appeared instead of a new version that's been modified by the director with CGI years later, of keeping a beloved book on their shelf instead of losing it in the ether as soon as they're done with it. Obviously, we're partial, but we're so grateful that so many of you are too. The Book Juggler turns 40 years old next year - quiet and steady in all its analog glory, and always happy to see you - in real life - in the aisles.

There’s a moment, familiar to anyone who has spent any time on social media, when the endless scrolling stops feeling like leisure and more like labor.…

Holy spicy ginger, Batman! Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe get the Heated treatment, if you know what I mean. Stayed up too late last night reading this Anne of Green Gables retelling and all I have to say is, swoon! Thanks to whoever traded this one in. Gotta love an unexpected treasure..
