More stormy weather on the way, and hands- down my favorite place to shelter is in our vault. There's something about a dark and stormy sky that makes Whitewater's coziest storm shelter feel like the safest spot in town. Come ride it out with a good book.

Stories save lives. That's not hyperbole β€” it's why representation matters, why Pride Month matters. When a young person sees themselves reflected in a book, a character, a story, they learn something essential: I am not alone. I am not wrong. I belong here.
So do you. πŸŒˆπŸ“š

🎭 Happy Birthday, Shakespeare β€” from Whitewater, Wisconsin, where the veil between worlds has always been a little thin. We celebrate The Bard by carrying Hamnet, by Maggie O'Farrell: the book behind the Oscar-winning film, the grief behind Hamlet, and the woman everyone finally stopped overlooking. I'd like to think Agnes would have fit right in here. Come find Hamnet at The Book Teller. To read, or not to read β€” that's not even a question. πŸ“šβœ¨

⚑ Well, Whitewater, last night did NOT hold back. Half the town is running on generator power and vibes β€” and more storms are on the way. But The Bookteller? We are open, fully stocked, and proudly analog.

Consider this your invitation to go full off-the-grid chic. No Wi-Fi, no streaming, no doom-scrolling. Just you, a book, and the radical act of reading words on paper like it's 1987.

Speaking of which β€” if you haven't met Marcellus the octopus yet, now is absolutely the time. *Remarkably Bright Creatures* by Shelby Van Pelt is warm, witty, and quietly wonderful: the story of a grieving widow and a very opinionated giant Pacific octopus who is, frankly, smarter than most of us. It's exactly what a stormy day calls for.

Come in, browse, stay a while. We've got books, good company, and the distinct pleasure of a space that runs perfectly fine without electricity in the forecast.

Stay cozy, stay dry, and stay safe out there, Whitewater. πŸŒ©οΈπŸ“š

As Black History Month closes, we're highlighting Ibram X. Kendi's Stamped from the Beginningβ€”a book that demonstrates how racist ideas weren't born from ignorance, but were deliberately constructed to justify policies.

By using the life stories of five major American voices, Kendi chronicles the story of racism in America and traces how those in power remain in power.

From slavery to Jim Crow, to immigration enforcement, the pattern persists, and this book reminds us that understanding history isn't about staying in the pastβ€”it's about recognizing when we're living through its sequel.

Happy Black History Month, America!

The Book Teller is honored to celebrate voices that illuminate Black excellence and celebrate the richness, complexity, and struggle for equality inherent of the Black experience in America.

Today, we're featuring the graphic novel "Black Arms to Hold You Up" by Ben Passmore.

Passmore's book is both a visceral history of Black Americans' struggle for liberation, and a celebration of Black Resistance, told through the sometimes conflicted relationship of a father and son. Black Arms... is a call to know our Black History.

Stop by to pick up your copy, or choose from other titles to deepen your understanding of Black history, this month and beyond.
