BEHIND THE BLOOM: Care Tips for Your Cut Flower Arrangement

Want to help your fresh flowers stay beautiful longer? Here are a few simple care tips that can make a big difference:

💧 Check the water daily. Flowers drink more than you might expect! Keep the vase filled with fresh water mixed with the provided flower food.

✂️ Give the stems a fresh cut. Every few days, trim about half an inch from the stems at an angle to help them absorb water more easily.

🍃 Keep the water clean. Remove any leaves or petals that fall below the waterline, and replace cloudy water promptly to prevent bacteria from building up.

☀️ Choose the right location. Keep your arrangement away from direct sunlight, heating vents, fireplaces and strong drafts. Flowers last longest in a cool, comfortable spot.

🍎 Keep flowers away from fresh fruit. As apples, bananas, pears, peaches and other fruits ripen, they release an invisible, odorless gas called ethylene. It’s harmless to people, but it can cause flowers to wilt, yellow, drop petals or fail to open fully.

A little daily care goes a long way toward keeping your flowers fresh, beautiful and blooming as long as possible!

Sometimes the smallest details become part of a much bigger story—especially when God is in the details. 💙

During COVID, when we were all spending more time at home than we ever imagined, Billie Jean and I decided to do some extensive remodeling and give the rest of our home a refresh. Dark navy blue has always been her favorite color, so we painted our dining room and foyer this deep, rich navy and filled the spaces with touches of gold.

Around that same time, some dear friends gave us this simple gold H. We hung it on the navy wall, and it was the perfect finishing touch.

We had absolutely no idea what God would eventually do with that little detail.

Just four years later, that navy wall and gold H became the inspiration behind the Hayes’s logo and the navy-and-gold branding that has become so much a part of who we are.

And now, those same colors and that same inspiration are finding new life as we restore our historic downtown building.

Looking back, it reminds us that God is present in even the smallest details of our lives. Things that may seem insignificant in the moment can become pieces of a story He is still writing.

From our home… to our logo… and now to our new home downtown.

Only God knew where that little gold H was headed. And we’re so thankful He did. 💙

When I sold this building to Jack and Sandy 20 years ago, there was an old loading door in the back of the building. I never used that door and it was essentially boarded shut.

Jack found these old antique doors and installed them in place of the old loading door in the back of the building.

Because of structural reasons pertaining to upstairs floor joists, we had to make the decision to remove that opening altogether which meant getting rid of the doors.

I wanted to keep these and use them as the front doors but they wouldn’t quite work. So, we made a place for them as the doors to our stockroom!! We had the paint stripped and we love what we found underneath!!

Aren’t they beautiful!! What do you think?

We have windows in, painting being done, and flooring going in but only in the areas we had to repair or replace. We kept the amazing original hardwood floors everywhere we could. It’s really coming together!!

Did someone say white wedding? 🤍

There is something undeniably beautiful about a wedding dressed in white.

Cloud-like white hydrangeas bring fullness and timeless elegance. Graceful calla lilies add refined beauty and sophistication. And the soft, romantic blooms of Alaskan peonies create a breathtaking finish that feels both luxurious and effortless.

It’s the kind of beauty that never chases trends because true elegance never goes out of style.

We count it a blessing to play a small part in one of life’s most sacred days, creating flowers that reflect the beauty of the promises being made.

Congratulations to every couple beginning their forever. May your love be as enduring as the memories you create.

Today the framing is going in for the new windows over the awning!! We had hoped to keep the originals, but they were just too far gone. Watching another piece of this historic building come back to life has been incredibly exciting, and it’s amazing to see the vision becoming reality one step at a time. We can’t wait to share what’s next. It’s really coming together!
