STORM CHASING!

Unless you live under a rock, you've seen the recent devastation that's taken place in North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. A thousand-year storm left a path of unimaginable destruction through many states – but especially the northern most portion of North Carolina. Many people have absolutely lost everything they had. Sadly, many have lost family members as well. A number of private organizations have stepped up and are offering life saving assistance for those affected. Point Blank Gun Works wants to help!

On October 26th we will be having a big one year anniversary celebration at the gun shop. There will be food available at Black Hawk Creek Grill. There will be live music, a number of fancy show cars, and we’re even trying to get a few miniature horses to pet on! During the festivities, Point Blank Gun Works will be raffling off a beautiful Howa 1500 chassis rifle. Decked out in American flag Cerakote, chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and topped with a very nice long range scope, this rifle is amazing. Tickets will cost $20 each or 6 for $100. The drawing will be at 5:00PM on the 26th and you do not need to be present to win. You can buy your tickets in advance at the gun shop or you can purchase them on the day of the raffle. We will be donating the proceeds of the raffle to Samaritan’s Purse. They are one of the aforementioned private organizations that are doing so much important work to help those whose lives have been interrupted by these terrible storms.

We are unable to sell tickets over the phone or online, so please stop by the store and get some tickets – you will be helping some folks who really need the assistance!

THE GUN THAT SHAPED THE WEST!

There is perhaps, no more storied a firearm in American history than the C**t Single Action Army Revolver. Referred to as the SAA, the Model P, the M1873, and most famously as The Peacemaker, the C**t SAA is legendary to be sure. It was the preferred sidearm of gunslingers of years past including Wyatt Earp, Butch Cassidy, Billy the Kid, Belle Star, Jesse James, and Bat Masterson. Still other infamous frontiersmen like Wild Bill Hickock and Doc Holliday seemed to prefer the variation of the C**t SAA and, instead, used the C**t SA Navy revolver. Many of these famous owners’ guns have sold and a quick internet search can lead down an amazing rabbit hole of American history.

There have been three generations of the C**t SAA. Gen 1 guns were manufactured prior to 1956. Gen 2 guns were built between 1956 and 1978 and Gen 3 guns have been produced since 1978. While C**t SAA revolvers are still produced, they are prized, expensive, and can be (depending on variation) very difficult to source. That said, a matched set of C**t SAA .45 Long C**t revolvers is a pretty spectacular addition to any gun collection! I’m unaware of any C**t SAA (save a pistol that’s been neglected or left in the elements) that has ever lost value. They are like Rolex watches or Ferbrache’ eggs – they simply appreciate and become more and more valuable. Some of the infamous names mentioned above have had their personal guns sold for millions of dollars. I once read a news story about a thief who stole a C**t SAA from a home in the northwest, only to use the gun to conduct several more robberies before being apprehended. After investigation, it was learned that the pistol the perpetrator was using was valued north of $200,000.00 – poetic justice I suppose!

Last week a gentleman meandered into Point Blank Gun Works and explained that he had a few C**t SAA revolvers he was interested in selling. Turns out, he had an even dozen of the prized guns. Six are nickel and six are case hardened. He had two of each finish in 7.5”, 5.5”, and 4.75” – As you might imagine, I was shocked to see so many of these remarkable pistols at one time. These guns were all produced between 1995 and 1998, and most amazingly of all, they had never been fired. They were all in their original boxes and he explained that most of the guns had never seen the light of day outside their boxes! Well, suffice it to say, after some negotiations, I was able to purchase the guns. They are now for sale here at Point Blank Gun Works and if you ever intend to add a C**t SAA (or two), to your collection, come on down… I’m certain they won’t last long!

OH DEER!

As deer season quickly approaches, I’ve noticed a slight uptick in ammunition purchases for deer rifles. Many hunters come into Point Blank Gun Works and are at something of a loss as to what manner of ammunition is best for deer hunting. There are basically four variables to consider when shopping for deer ammunition:

1.) Caliber (the big variable with regard to the weight of bullet that can be accommodated)
2.) Bullet weight (the big variable in downrange energy)
3.) Bullet type (the big variable in cavitation of the game animal)
4.) Powder charge (the big variable in bullet velocity and subsequent downrange energy)

Any game animal, including a deer, is killed by two things – shot placement and bullet energy at impact. Conventional wisdom is that a minimum of 1,000 ft. pounds of energy at impact is required to efficiently and humanly harvest a deer. You can imagine that energy is lost between the muzzle of the rifle and the impact with the deer. So, what should your minimums be? I will tell you what my minimums are, and while some might feel differently, these numbers are well fleshed out amongst the hunting community:

Minimum caliber - .243 WIN (preferred caliber .284 aka 7MM REM MAG)
Minimum bullet weight – 125 grains (preferred bullet weight 150 grains)
Bullet type – expanding ballistic tip (preferred bullet type – partition ballistic tip)
Minimum powder charge – 70-80 grains.

My preferred deer setup is a 7MM REM MAG loaded with Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets and 61 gr. of IMR 4831 powder. While I shoot hand loaded ammunition, over the counter ammunition can closely duplicate my goto round. Obviously larger game might necessitate a larger caliber rifle and larger bullet/powder charge. Just remember, you want the bullet to hit your deer while it still has at least 1,000 ft. pounds of energy. There are a number of ballistic calculators available online that you can employ to determine the downrange energy of your hunting round.

Shot placement is very important on any game animal, and especially deer. There’s noting worse than injuring an animal and failing to find it… that’s the voice of experience! Generally speaking, most game animals should be struck in a paper plate sized target at or slightly behind their front shoulder. While a shot to the neck or head could obviously prove fatal, striking the vitals is always the best way to dispatch an animal.

We have a wide variety of ammunition available at Point Blank Gun Works… come in an see us!

THE DEER RIFLE

Deer hunting season is nearly upon us! Here in Texas, deer season means something very different than it does in other places. It’s part social, part practical, part educational, but mostly it’s traditional. My grandpa taught my dad how to harvest a deer. My dad taught me how to harvest a deer. And I’m teaching my children how to harvest deer. It really is a rite of passage. While I’ve been shooting guns my entire life (and I’m old), I didn’t become a serious hunter until I was in my late 20s. A couple of close friends let me tag along on hunts and I was immediately hooked.

My first deer rifle was a Sako Model 75 in 7MM Re*****on Magnum. It was a gift from one of the aforementioned friends. It’s topped with a nice Leupold scope, and I’ve shot deer, elk, hogs, coyotes, and even two turkeys (one shot… ask me to tell you the story next time you’re in the gun shop). I treasure that rifle and there are a number of heads and hides in my house that were taken with it. I can honestly tell you that I’ve never missed a game animal with that gun. Since that time I’ve added a half dozen more Sako rifles to my hunting collection, but I still lean on that 7MM when it’s important.

If you’re a hunter, it’s critically important that you have a rifle you can really depend on. It needs to be in good order, clean, and with a solid sight system. It needs to have sufficient knock down power for the game you’re pursuing. And most importantly, you must be able to trust your skills with your rifle. In war it’s completely acceptable to wound the enemy. In fact, it might be preferred. An injured enemy combatant takes many more people to care for than one that was cleanly dispatched. In hunting, it’s the exact opposite! Injuring an animal is risky business. The animal is left suffering. It might escape your harvest and die unfound. And lacking the ability to make a clean and efficient kill on a game animal is unethical. So, before you climb into the blind, up the tree stand, or walk out into the open wild – PRACTICE! Shoot your rifle. Perfect your skills. If your gun needs repairs or upgrading – come and see me at Point Blank Gun Works. I will get you lined out and will look forward to your hunting story when the season ends!

Finally, if you need to renew your hunting and fishing license – come down and see us!
