The Paradox Book Store

The Paradox Book Store This eclectic shop is the oldest bookstore in West Virginia. This eclectic used bookstore is actually the oldest used bookstore in West Virginia.

It was opened by Tom Stobart 40 years ago when he was just twenty and a young playwright. As you walk up the few steps to the small store, you'll notice that he stocks a bookshelf built into the wall right outside. There is a sign posted with wording to the effect that anyone needing a book may take one and pay later, exchange a book for a book or just take a book with no payment if you are in dir

e circumstances but with a desire to read. There is also a sign stating the store's hours which in a witty and almost poetic way convey the simple fact that they can change like the wind. But Tom's there everyday I've stopped by and his hours seem to be better than most stores of this or that type. The books are placed in sections but there is no rhyme or reason within the sections which is simply fantastic. You may go in with the hope of finding something vaguely particular but those hopes will soon be replaced by the ecstasy of finding unsought jewels and new wonders that you never knew existed.

‼️If you are an Ohio resident, you need to know about several important petitions that are collecting signatures RIGHT NOW‼️

‼️You can find the details of each one below. We will have them available to sign until June 1st. So stop by The Paradox Book Store any time and add your name to get these issues on the ballot this November.‼️

📢Prohibition of Construction of a Data Center -- By Conserve Ohio 📢
https://conserveohio.com

This petition and this effort are about keeping Ohio in the hands of its people and keeping Ohio from becoming the "tech dump" that blind, uncaring corporate interests are rapidly pushing for it to be. This non-partisan effort is truly grassroots. We are people looking out for our communities in a time when communities are at risk.

This petition seeks to amend the Ohio Constitution in order to ban the construction of data centers that consume over 25 megawatts (MW) of energy per month. 25 MW is the threshold between a manageable, community-friendly facility and an industrial-scale data center that can use as much power as a small town. Our petition simply says that anything bigger than 25 MW should be prohibited. Ohio already has approximately 200 data centers and does not need any more.

📢Protecting Ohioans’ Constitutional Rights Amendment -- By Ohio Coalition to End Qualified Immunity📢
https://oceqi.org

Qualified Immunity is a legal loophole that makes it almost impossible to sue government officials and politicians when your constitutional rights are violated.

The existence of qualified immunity has led to a lack of accountability for our government and has hindered the ability of citizens to seek justice for the misconduct of government employees. This has resulted in a lack of transparency and accountability within government and has prevented victims of misconduct from seeking accountability and compensation for their injuries.

Ending qualified immunity would ensure that we, the people, are able to hold our government accountable when it violates our constitutional rights.

📢The Ohio Equal Rights Amendment and The Ohio Right to Marry Amendment -- By Ohio Equal Rights📢
https://www.ohioequalrights.org

The Ohio Equal Rights Amendment and the Ohio Right to Marry Amendment would collectively be the most comprehensive state equal rights framework in the nation, ensuring that our State and local governments never infringe upon our rights as Ohioans.

The Ohio Constitution does not contain an Equal Rights Amendment and still includes a ban on same-s*x marriage. This means that Ohioans are not constitutionally protected from discrimination by our State and local governments because of race, s*x, pregnancy status, s*xual orientation, disability, or other attributes. Instead, we must rely on an ever-changing, unreliable legislature to protect our rights. Additionally, marriage equality is only guaranteed by federal protections, and could be lost in the state if overturned federally.

The Ohio Equal Rights Amendment would limit the Ohio legislature's power to discriminate against Ohioans with our own tax dollars. It would protect citizens from discrimination based on race, color, creed or religion, s*x, s*xual orientation, gender identity or expression, regardless of s*x assigned at birth, pregnancy status, genetic information, disease status, age, disability, recovery status, familial status, ancestry, national origin, or military and veteran status.

For almost 50 years, the porch of The Paradox has tried to make sure that anyone who wants to read has the option to do so -- even if they have no money (at least in our little section of the world). Today, we find it necessary to expand that mission to include doing what we can to make sure everyone in our community who needs to eat, has access to food.

As part of this effort, any customer who brings in a canned food item can choose a free hardback book from our Dollar Specials. Food donations do need to be canned, as they will be outside and we don't want to attract critters.

“Where there is hunger there is no hope. There is only desolation and pain. Hunger nurtures violence and fanaticism. A world where people starve will never be safe.”

— Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

🚨Neighbors support neighbors: EBT cardholder discounts incoming!🚨

Neely’s has always been more than a store.

When they opened our doors in 1956, Nancy and Vernon Neely believed every family in East Wheeling deserved access to good food — no matter what life threw at them. Nancy made sure people could get what they needed, especially when times were tough.

And right now, some of our neighbors are facing real uncertainty. With SNAP/EBT benefits delayed during the government shutdown, families who rely on that help may be left waiting.

So, starting Nov. 1 until benefits are distributed, anyone with an EBT card can receive 10% off:
• Bread;
• Lunchmeat & cheese; and
• Milk

Just keep eligible products separate and show us your card. We’ll take care of the rest.

And if you’re someone who’s wondering how you can help your neighbors through this — keep an eye out. We’re working on a simple, private way to pay it forward directly to families who need a little boost.

For 69 years, East Wheeling has taken care of its own.
We’re just making sure Nancy’s spirit keeps leading the way. ❤️

Y’all. Y’aaaaaaaaaallllllllll.

If you’ve ever wanted to show us some love now is a fantastic time. Our 17 year old pup ShortRound (who you may have seen putting on a dramatic old dog routine for pets at shows) was attacked last night and had to be rushed to the emergency vet. Against all wound based evidence she made it to the emergency vet and shocked us all! For real tho. They came in to prep us for the end, then were like “so actually…” every ghast I’ve ever had is still flabbered.

Since we’re in the lead up to the holiday season funds are really tight. Any early gift purchases or impulse buys are deeply appreciated! If you don’t need a pot right now, but still want to support an old pupper in need we will happily accept a Venmo donation to her care .

If you donate we would like to send you a little something something to thank you for being so amazing! We’re not sure exactly what it is yet, but after today’s vet appointment (and consequent vet bill. On top of yesterday’s emergency bill. *hyperventilates a bit*) we should have a better idea of what’s going on and what kind of outcomes we can expect.

All that to say, we really appreciate any help you can send our way in this deeply stressful time!
