By Mike Hawkins::: There's a story behind these grips, just finished, and shipping tomorrow..I'm only sharing this here because its gonna close the book on a very stressful few weeks..Tomorrows a new day..These are Handmade, literally, the Scrimshaw is done in a Traditional style with a heavy hand..
This project has over 75 hours in them, should have taken me a little less than half that, from a set of Mammoth blocks to the finished product...But these turned out to be a hellacious nightmare for me. The first set was in the last stages of completion, with one slabs artwork finished and half way through the second slab when I noticed a flaw under the polished surface of slab 2 when my tool didn't act right when I made my cut.
Never had this happen before, dont know what caused it but it seemed like a spot hadn't taken in the Stabilization process..Never.
I had 1 of 3 choices..1..take the bad grip down, hoping it wasnt deep 2..remake that side since I was going to have to do the Scrimshaw over again..Or 3..Remake the whole set, lose the hours I've put in, in order to make absolutely sure the Client gets my absolute best..
I had to go with regretfully had to go with 3. If I took one side down, it would make one side thicker than the other, not an option at all in my eyes..2 I thought was possible but do to the color being too off from the other I went ahead and made a full set..I did this because my idea of my best would not allow me to do something mediocre and let it leave my shop..Couldnt do it..But yet after sending pics and explaining this individual showed his true colors..he truly left a bad taste in my mouth by the things he said, the way he acted..I wanted to so badly return his deposit, give him a piece of my mind and eat all the time I wasted and move on..I completed them, knowing what kind of person he truly was..I had made grips for him before, same issues with rushing, hurrying and being nasty..Becka warned me not to take another order from him after the first one, then warned me again before I took the second one..I didn't listen, but am listening now..
Folks, I work for myself, no helpers, no CNC, no Computer or engraving equipment, this is all done BY HAND, I even make my own scribes for Scrimshawing..I do it the old way, because I'm a Traditionalist, and carry that value through to many aspects of my daily life..I love what I do, and take pride in it..and if it's not the best I can do, I feel that I'm cheating the person that is expecting my best. My best is what each and every one of those trusting me get and that's an absolute fact..I also attached pics of the set that was almost finished along with the blemish under the surface..could have covered it up, the only person that would have known would have been me, but that is the one person that I trust to do the right thing..I know this is long, but like I said, this is closing a weeks long chapter that I could have done without..ππΊπΈπΊπΈπΊπΈπΊπΈ
