We have been busy at Ross Double Bass over the last few months and haven’t had a chance to post much on our page.
Here’s an update:
Lot’s of bass repairs and selling a bunch of basses. Sadly we just said goodbye to the killer Juzek bass that was recently purchased by someone who fell in love with it. We also have been selling MANY of the Shen plywood and hybrid basses.
We get so many inquires about these basses and I have been playing one of the hybrids myself lately for a bunch of gigs and recordings. Here are some of my thoughts.
In a nutshell it’s a nice bass. The neck and shoulders are easy to navigate and it it is easy and comfortable to play in all registers. With Spirocore weichs on it has a full pizz sound that is nicely balanced up and down the neck. I found it easy to get “my sound” which I think is pretty bright but also has some strong low end. Speaking of which this instrument has a string low end and puts out a nice “bassy” tone. Thru a lifeline pickup and into my AI amp the live amplified sound was easy to dial in and worked well. Sometimes I had to reduce the bass level depending on the room but that’s always the trade off when you have a lot of low end in your sound.
Under the bow with the Spirocores it sounds fine. Not world class orchestral sound but it is good for a student or even a college/amateur orchestra. It would also work for a professional wanting a 2nd classical bass for outdoor gigs and situations where you don’t want to risk damage to a more expensive instrument.
I have done a couple informal iPhone videos for people interested in these instruments. We have wanted to have something a bit higher quality and recently I played it on a duo session that we recorded at the guitar players house. Nothing fancy. AKG mic into Logic.
I think the recorded sound reflects what it sounds like live when I play.

Beautiful day here in Wheat Ridge Colorado at Ross Double Bass.
We are hard at work repairing, restoring and selling basses. Speaking of which we recently finished the restoration on a Morelli bass which sounds amazing AND it now has a removable neck.

Sad news as we mourn the passing of our friend Denver trumpet/cornet icon Ron Miles. Great player and a really sweet soul. RIP.

The cornetist, composer and bandleader combined a distinctly American harmonic palette with an openhearted emotional clarity uncommon in modern jazz.

It’s ski day at Monarch for part of the Ross Double Bass team. We are enjoying our time off. We will reopen on March 9.

And here’s a picture of our almost completed restoration on the Morelli Bass we have had for a while and will be for sale soon. Even in initial rough set-up this thing is absolutely smoking.

Go checkout and support retired Air Force Academy Band Falconaires Bassist and now Ross Double Bass employee Jason Crowe at the Muse Performance Space next Thursday, February 10 at 7pm. We will make sure he has a decent bass to play!

Busy day here at Ross Double Bass. We are fixing basses, setting up basses and lots of cleaning.
We finally have a short video presentation on the Shen SB-88 plywood basses we sell. After arrival these instruments get 8 hours of set-up time including new bridges. The bass in the video below is fresh off the table with Spirocore Weichs and a Fishman Full Circle.
