It’s just about go time!

Deadly Dozen for the win! It’s time to be getting ready to plant those fall food plots and my hands down favorite fall planted plot is Deadly Dozen from Real World Wildlife Products With 12 plant species there is something in the mix that deer find attractive over a wide window from the time it first germinates,through the early season, during the rut, all winter long and into the following spring when it becomes a great plot for spring turkey season.

I came up with the idea for Deadly Dozen and started testing various plant species on my farm to dial in the right mix of plants. This photo is of my second 200” buck Smokey entering one of those experimental plots the year before I shot him when he scored 186” based on his shed antlers. The following season I shot him in a Deadly Dozen plot before Deadly Dozen was even a thing. A year later Deadly Dozen was introduced to the industry and Smokey’s photo is actually on the bag. Now you know the rest of the story.

Incidentally, yesterday I was at the Real World warehouse helping blend 16,000 more pounds of Deadly Dozen seed for bagging. Deadly Dozen is easily the top selling fall planted seed product at Real World for good reason. Those who have planted it seem to always come back year after year for more.

Worth a read, nature has a way of adapting.

The country’s leading CWD genetics researcher just called CWD “by far the most corrupt area of scientific concern” he has ever experienced in his career. Dr. Christopher Seabury is a tenured professor at Texas A&M who has spent more than two decades studying prion diseases and has worked with USDA on genetic approaches to CWD. In a recent letter, Seabury pointed to Wisconsin as the real-world example nobody wants to talk about. Despite years of aggressive CWD management, including attempts to drastically reduce deer numbers, CWD continued to spread. Yet according to the Wisconsin population data he included, the state’s deer population increased by more than 82% from 2008 to 2024, reaching an estimated 1.825 million deer.

Seabury’s argument is that nature is already be doing what government management has failed to do. Selecting for deer that are more tolerant or resistant to CWD, allowing them to become infected but still survive and reproduce. He wrote that “mother nature has already done the experiment for us, and she won in the battle against CWD,” before saying the entire CWD field is the most corrupt area of science he has encountered and warning states to follow actual evidence instead of “ideological talking points.” That is one hell of a statement coming from a PHD researcher who has spent his career actually studying prion disease.
