I started Nan's Nummies at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market in 1988. After a couple of weeks there I just couldn't make cookies fast enough. So I started looking for a storefront and opened my store in Historic Valley Junction the following spring. I started with about 8 kinds of cookies and over the years have added about 8 more kinds of cookies, brownies and bars, Dutch Letters, candy and

fudge. I have moved to bigger locations in Valley Junction twice and also expanded my current store twice! We also carry loads of chocolates, truffles and bulk candy including Jelly Belly’s and salt water taffy.

Okay… apparently the secret is out.

There’s a certain little machine hanging around Nan’s Nummies that has been getting an AWFUL LOT of attention lately.

How much attention?

YOU GUYS HAVE EMPTIED IT TWICE THIS WEEK. 😂

It was freshly stocked again this morning with:
🍪 Frosted cookies
🍪 Our regular cookies
🥐 Dutch Letters
🤤 Almond Cremes
🍬 $1.95 bags of candy
🚬 **CANDY CI******ES** - yes, the nearly impossible-to-find kind!
🥤 Pop & water

So if you happen to find yourself near Nan’s Nummies when we’re closed… well…

And judging by how fast you guys keep cleaning it out, some of you already know EXACTLY what we’re talking about. 😂

Depending on who you listen to for the forecast, it may or may not rain... Heck...its Iowa... we might have a blizzard... Who knows?

Either way, we are keeping it going! For those of you with beautiful cars, bring them out. For those that just like looking at them, come enjoy!

We are looking for a few knowledgeable judges for our final Nan’s Nummies Car Show!

We need people who:
- Know their way around vehicles and can fairly judge different makes, models, builds, and modifications
- Are comfortable looking at things like overall condition, workmanship, attention to detail, presentation, etc.
- DO NOT have a vehicle entered in the show — gotta keep it fair! 😉 I cannot be a judge because I love them all so much and cant play favorites! So I need help!!!

If you’re a car enthusiast, mechanic, builder, detailer, collector, or just someone who REALLY knows their stuff, we’d love your help!

It's Thursday, which means it's time to fill Elm Street with some incredible rides!

Join us TODAY from 4:00-8:00 PM at Nan's Nummies, 501 Elm Street for another evening of classic cars, cool trucks, muscle cars, and sweet treats.

🍪 Stop into the bakery for your favorite scratch-made goodies.
🛒 Don't forget to visit our Cake Cart outside, stocked with cakes, cookies, and plenty of treats while you're checking out the cars and the Farmers Market.

🚗 NO CAR SHOW TONIGHT 🚗

Just a quick reminder! There will NOT be a car show tonight.

Elm Street will be closed for the VFW's kids event, so our car show participants will not be able to park.

The good news? Starting NEXT Thursday, we'll have a car show EVERY Thursday through the end of August with the final awards show the last Thursday! 🎉

We hope everyone has a wonderful time at the VFW kids event tonight, and we can't wait to see all of our amazing cars back on Elm Street next Thursday!

Well... it finally happened.

Many of you know our awning has been hanging on by a thread for quite some time. We've patched it, repaired it, crossed our fingers, and squeezed every bit of life we could out of it because we lease our building, and replacing a commercial awning is an expense that simply hasn't been realistic in this economy.

Unfortunately, the storms that rolled through last night were the final blow. The awning is now damaged beyond repair.

With nearly 4,700 amazing people following this page, I'm hoping the power of our community can help point us in the right direction.
Do you know a company that installs commercial awnings? Someone who might be able to repair or recover the frame? A business that offers reasonable pricing, financing, or even has experience working with older storefronts?

Owning a small business means tackling one unexpected expense after another, and this one definitely wasn't on my bingo card for 2026. 😅 But we'll figure it out, just like we always do.
