Four goats and one Indigoat ✨
Our little herd, I can’t explain what this means to me. Goats bring an excellent touch of the devil, they are spritely, wild creatures. Their will is strong and stubborn, their energy chaotic and pure. I love them.
Ian first introduced me to goats, he first felt their devilish pull. I was slowly convinced once my daily job became shepherding a group of bucklings through the Mexican desert to forage. Forage.
The goats taught us how to forage. They have these magical mouths that allow them to fully bite and taste a plant, decide if it’s good or not. These young ones are already doing it. They’re called palates, which makes sense. They taste and smell without having to ingest. This is how I learned to forage- taste it, spit it out if it tastes bad. Easy. (ONLY WORKS FOR PLANTS, NOT MUSHROOMS!)
The goats remind me of how this started, and how long ago that was. 10 years since I last worked with Lamanchas, this weird breed with tiny elf ears. There was a goat in Mexico, Luisa, who was a Lamancha, and we were close. It’s all deeply sentimental to me, this little group of mammals. I look forward to many foraging days ahead, as a herd.
