In the 25 years I’ve been servicing small engines I’ve seen the following scenario hundreds of times. The customer brings their lawnmower in to the shop after they have been trying to start the machine unsuccessfully for days. They’ve enlisted the help of neighbors and still the piece of #@?? #% won’t run. Yep it happens over and over again! Be sure to familiarize yourself with your equipment. Know

about the on/off switches, throttle & choke settings, fuel on/off valve and other preparations necessary for proper operation. This along with employing the advice offered on this page will have you up and running in no time. Bad Fuel is the number 1 reason for engine and carburetor problems and “no start” conditions. So stick to fresh pumped gas in a clean, preferably plastic, gas can. Never store more than a two weeks supply in your machine’s fuel tank or in a storage can without using a fuel stabilizer available from a power equipment retailer. Gasoline in quantities less than a gallon will go stale in as little as 30 days. “Going Stale” means atmospheric contamination usually from water v***r, loss of potency due to chemical breakdown and thickening of the fuel due to ev***ration. This is especially detrimental for small engines because the thick fuel gums up the very small metering holes inside the carburetor leading to costly professional repairs. Any machine only used for one short season, and then not used for several months should have the fuel drained and run dry prior to storage. Could it be the Choke or Primer? Failure of the primer due to weathering or cracking will result in no pumping and a “no start” condition. Ignition Problems? Bad plugs can still render a “no start” condition but they can be simply replaced for a few dollars.Oil Issues? Many engines now have an oil sensor that will shut the engine off or prevent a start up if the oil level is low. Check Air Filter ? A seriously obstructed air filter can yield a “no start” condition. A partially blocked filter can contribute to poor performance like running rough, stalling and hard starting. If none of this works, or just seems too overwhelming to tackle on your own….Then give us a call to schedule a service visit. We’re always here to help.

TIPS!!

Lawnmowers:
Never lay lawnmowers on their side or flip them over as this will feed oil from the crank case into the air filter, causing the air filter to be ruined.
