🎡 Is “Big Tex” the Next Big Thing in Texas Tattoos?
Move over longhorns, bluebonnets, and lone stars — there’s a new ink obsession sweeping across the Lone Star State, and it’s bigger than a cowboy hat in a windstorm. Texans are lining up at shops from Houston to Amarillo asking for one thing: the State Fair of Texas on their skin.
Big Tex, Bigger Ink
Leading the charge is none other than Big Tex himself — the 55-foot talking cowboy mascot of the State Fair. Once known for welcoming fried food lovers at Fair Park in Dallas, Big Tex is now popping up on backs, arms, and even ribcages. Tattooers say his grin, hat, and giant belt buckle have become instant icons in black-and-grey realism and even full-color neo-traditional.
“People used to ask for Jesus or Elvis — now it’s Big Tex and a corn dog,” one Dallas artist joked.
From Funnel Cakes to Ferris Wheels
But it’s not just the cowboy. Clients are calling for Texas-shaped funnel cakes, Ferris wheels lit up in neon, carnival rides spinning in motion, and midway booths loaded with balloon-dart games. It’s a whole mural of fried food, rodeo grit, and childhood nostalgia — the smell of grease and cotton candy immortalized in ink.
One Houston shop even reports a three-hour wait for their “Mini-Midway Special,” a flash sheet featuring stick-and-poke style corndogs, turkey legs, and candy apples.
Why the Craze?
Some say it’s pride. Some say it’s comedy. And some just want to carry the fair with them year-round — no ticket required. In an era where tattoos are less about toughness and more about storytelling, the State Fair of Texas is proving to be a well of shared memories and cultural charm.
As one newly-inked fair-fan put it: “Sure, I love my mom. But did she ever deep-fry butter and hand it to me with a smile? That’s why I got the funnel cake.”
The Verdict
Whether it’s Big Tex tipping his hat, or a plate of powdered-sugar glory on your bicep, Texas tattoos are getting bigger, bolder, and funnier. Forget the rodeo — this year, the real showdown is at the tattoo shop
