Learn the incredible tale behind the most important album cover in rock history: 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'

Let’s go back to Crumb’s Cheap Thrills album cover artwork. Crumb was friends with Janis Joplin and consented to do the front and back cover artwork for their new album. Although Crumb didn’t like the music, he consented as a favor for Janis. Columbia had vetoed the use of the band’s original idea for the front cover (the band naked in bed together). So by the time Janis requested the artwork, Crumb only had a day or two to do it as the album was about to be released. Crumb took amphetamines to stay up all night and do the front and back of the album cover. The front cover was a cartoon of Janis. The back of the album contained the names of the band members and the songs contained on the album. The band loved the back illustration but not the front. So they took what was meant to be the back of the album and made it the front.
A little more on this with the next post.
