These little peach seeds went into pots this week. 🍑

Some seeds, like peaches, need a period of cold temperatures to mimic winter before they'll sprout. This process is called stratification. I kept these in the fridge for a few months and when I checked on them, most had already started to germinate.

They're a cold hardy selection that can handle Wisconsin winters, so if all goes well, in 3 to 5 years we might have some local peaches to offer along with a few peach trees for sale.

Now I just have to figure out how to keep the chipmunks from beating me to them. 🐿️🌱

Happy Mother’s Day, and thank you to all the amazing moms out there for everything you do. 🌸

The long days, hard work, your patience, your support, and all the little things that usually go unnoticed don’t go unappreciated.

I love these little guys. I always think of spring when I see pansies blooming. My mom always had a patch by the side of the house, and they still bring a smile to my face when I see them.

Mud balls!

Trying something new this year by growing a few plants in hand-formed soil blocks instead of pots. I saw it on YouTube and figured it was worth a shot.

When roots reach the edge of the soil, they stop instead of circling, so they don’t get root bound. Similar to how pruning above ground encourages branching, the same thing happens below ground with the roots.

Another bonus is using less plastic!

I planted some out of the greenhouse last week and these guys didn't miss a beat.

The potted plants showed some transplant shock, while these looked like nothing had happened.

I’ll probably keep experimenting with this next season. I've also got some peppers, broccoli, and eggplant growing with this method now.

Plus, you know, who doesn't love to play in the mud? 🤣
