Have you noticed the "w**ds" growing in the ponds at Thomas Farm Preserve?

Today, a city contractor sprayed a heribicide called ProcellaCOR on the w**ds - called parrot feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) - growing around the edges of the ponds. Parrot feather is an invasive aquatic w**d that aggressively spreads in water bodies, forming dense mats that can disrupt ecosystems, clog waterways, and outcompete native vegetation.

The decision to use the herbicide ProcellaCOR is important for several reasons:

1. Selective Control – ProcellaCOR specifically targets invasive aquatic w**ds like parrot feather while minimizing harm to native plants and aquatic life.

2. Long-Lasting Effect – Unlike some other herbicides, ProcellaCOR provides extended control with lower application rates, reducing the need for frequent treatments.

3. Minimal Environmental Impact – It degrades quickly and does not accumulate in sediment or water, making it safer for fish, amphibians, and other aquatic organisms.

4. Systemic Action – ProcellaCOR is absorbed by the plant and translocated throughout its structure, killing both the emergent and submerged portions of parrot feather, ensuring more effective eradication.

5. Reduces Manual Labor & Costs – Chemical treatment is often more efficient than mechanical removal, which can be labor-intensive and less effective in preventing regrowth.

The city’s goal is to restore balance to the pond, keep it ecologically healthy and to keep your lures from getting tangled! ProcellaCOR is not harmful to humans, fish, or aquatic creatures when applied correctly.
