Wow May 1st will be our one year anniversary of opening TREEHOUSE in Waterbury! These photos were taken on this day one year ago as we prepared to open!

Come celebrate Record Store Day this week (Saturday, April 18th) with us. We aren’t “officially” participating—that’s only for stand alone stores and we respect the national RSD rules on that—so we won’t have the one off RSD releases but Record Store Day is a HUGE part of our yearly sales for Autumn Records Waterbury, and is this coming Saturday, April 18th! We recently got a motherload of new and used releases so our bins will be stacked for ya!

“The Red Studio” by Henri Matisse, 1911.

URGENT ///

TREEHOUSE will be closed at least this Saturday and potentially Sunday as well. Joseph’s illness, which is now beyond physical (he has just checked himself into the ER with what appears to be walking pneumonia) has now extended to a complete mental and psychological breakdown. All of this is from the attempted unlawful eviction from our spaces at The Phoenix and Waterbury Studios. He is under intense stress and our upcoming mediation meeting next week, in which we might learn that Myers Mermel, the new owner of 5 and 7 Stowe Street, will refuse to sell us the building, has put him in a state of near paralysis despite appearances otherwise. Mental health never bops you on the head and unless the sufferer (Joseph, who is writing this) is transparent about it, you might guess that he was the same happy go lucky guy you see around town.

Our leases, which were flagrantly disregarded in the Dec 22nd eviction notice, have two years remaining downstairs, with a much needed negotiation for our upstairs lease, which ended months before he purchased the building.

We are calling on the citizens and businesses in Waterbury to physically protest outside of WDEV for the next week and communicate to this bad actor, who has now, regardless of his awareness or ownership of the effect this has had on us, has caused severe personal damage.

We started The Phoenix and Waterbury Studios to be common good spaces for the town of Waterbury. All this personal investment ($50,000 of Joseph’s own money plus countless hours of labor) will be for nothing, not to mention Anna’s countless hours of work—legal and otherwise—to support this venture and build it to the sustainable spaces they have become.

Thank you for your help. We are done being polite and we would ask you to hear us. Refrain from mean words, physical violence or threatening behavior. Please do use your free speech rights to make it utterly clear that this will not be tolerated in our little village.

With love and all the mental effort I currently have left, which is very little,

Joseph

PS Anna is here with me and I’m gonna be ok but I’ve hit my limit.

TREEHOUSE, The Phoenix and the Hesterly Black are closed today. Joseph is sick and doesn’t want to give you this awfulness (the flu). Very much hoping to be back open tomorrow (Friday).

In the meantime enjoy this collection of work by Agnes Pelton (1881-1961), Intentionally moving away from the “mainstream” arts community, Pelton eventually settled in Cathedral City, California. She painted conventional desert landscapes to make a living, but it was her abstract studies of earth and light, biomorphic compositions of delicate veils, shimmering stars, and atmospheric horizon lines, that distinguished her work. A believer in numerology, astrology, and faith healing, Pelton’s abstract compositions propelled her into an esoteric world epitomized by the Transcendental Painting Group (1938-1942), a short-lived group that promoted abstract, non-objective art. (from “Desert Transcendentalist”, Phoenix Art Museum)

Hi you lovely people of Vermont, while we are very excited about the snow and nerdy indoor activities like the New Yorker crossword, we are sadly gonna follow the emergency travel warnings in effect starting at 1pm today because of the coming snowstorm so TREEHOUSE is going to be closed again today. Members and tenants are free to use the space but the retail side will be closed.

OPEN GLASS DOOR CORNER STUDIO STARTING APRIL 1st, 2026

First slide: empty studio, Second slide: Goldenrod Design/Willow Tree Journeys’ gorgeous current setup (here til April 1 2026).

$1200/mo includes all utilities, 2GB business grade Fidium Fiber internet, 24/7 keyed access plus your own business mailbox. Concierge service at the front desk for any clients picking up packages or work. Brio Coffee brewed daily, work alongside Thrashley Photography, Dean Liebau Design, Starling Strategy, Courtney Reckord Jewelry and Ripen Media. On site Autumn Records, Used Books and contemporary art on exhibit and for sale throughout the space. Commuter shower available for those who run or bike to work (or just want to skip the shower at home).

We call this the “money studio” at TREEHOUSE because not only is it the largest, it is a corner studio with vaulted ceilings, skylight and two huge windows that overlook Prohibition Pig (yes you’d be working that close to Vermont’s foodie/beer mecca right here in Waterbury Village). Goldenrod Design and Willow Tree Journeys have been sharing the studio for the past year and while they love the space, Goldenrod’s educational and private clients have ballooned such that they are out in the field far more than the studio, and Willow Tree Journeys is starting grad school while continuing yoga and reiki classes all over Vermont. Ask Rachel or Hillary and about their experience at TREEHOUSE and they’ll tell you all about this amazing space and opportunity.

The studio is 174 sq ft, room dimensions are 19’ x 9’2”.

Tours of the space start now and are available either by stopping in during TREEHOUSE’s open hours or preferably by setting up a viewing appointment by DMing us or emailing Joseph at [email protected].

This studio space would be ideal for a group of therapists, massage therapists, lawyers, accountants, graphic designers, marketers, etc etc. Please share widely with your Waterbury loving friends for whom this would be a dream workspace/office/studio.

Please welcome our newest neighbor/glass door studio tenant at TREEHOUSE, Macon Phillips of Starling Strategy! 🌿 starlingstrategy.com

For Macon, setting up shop here is a total full-circle moment. He actually started his career in Burlington as an AmeriCorps*VISTA with .dream.program before heading to DC to spend two decades in digital strategy—including leading digital teams for the Obama White House. State Department and CARE USA.

He moved back to Warren with his family during the pandemic and has been diving back into local life (he currently serves on the Warren Planning Commission).

At Starling, Macon helps organizations “Learn, Lift, and Lead.” He combines his background in community organizing with new AI technologies to help clients unlock deep insights from their data, build custom apps, and activate authentic voices to drive real-world change.

If you see him grabbing a coffee, say hi! ☕️

And this is actually a BONUS/double welcome, because James Bowen of Ripen Studios is not leaving TREEHOUSE—he’s just scooting over to a designated desk membership! He’ll remain part of our creative studios community, just five feet away in the Birch Room desk spaces!
