WoodyThings’s custom ordered retirement chest for an Air Force servicemember 🫡

We're proud to share a custom ordered Retirement Chest for a retiring U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer and U.S. Army veteran.

Our standard 24" Dual Flag Retirement Chest was personalized with blue felt on the inside lid, just like the inside shadowbox tray. The chest was made to accommodate three folded flags.

We used rope to serve as handles, and adorned the chest with gold hardware to stand out against the dark wood stain.

The front of the chest includes the recipient's rank, name, and military components where he served.

The top of the chest was also personalized with his years of service on the top corners of the chest. A Coast Guard emblem centers the chest, while a Coast Guard Anchor is highlighted on the bottom left, and an Eagle holding the traditional Anchor on the bottom right.


We love how this version turned out.

Take a look at a recent retirement chest and Shadowbox for a retiring Marine Gunnery Sergeant.

We were recently asked to help showcase a retiring Marine with a special gift. We’ve made a set of Retirement Chest and Shadowbox painted in olive drab, distressed to showcase a battle worn exterior.

On the outside of the chest we added the Marine’s rank, name and dates of service on durable, glossy vinyl.

The inside of the lid contains two flags – a set of folded US Air Force and a Marine Corps flag, used to represent the Marine’s military career in both services.

The center doubles as a shadowbox where we’ve added a few items (provided by the Marines) to highlight the GySgt’s accomplishments.

Centered on top is the Marine Corps Eagle, Globe and Anchor.

Climbing on the left is a set of USAF Chevrons depicting the Marine’s prior career. On the right side you’ll find a set of Marine Corps

Chevron/, representing the same.

You’ll find an impressive set of medals earned for such a distinguished career right in the middle.

Directly below that is the Marine Corps Hymn, flanked by the top ranks earned in both the Air Force and the Marine Corps.

The United States Navy occupational rating of boatswain’s mate (abbreviated as BM) is a designation given by the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) to enlisted members who were rated or “striking” for the rating as a deck seaman. The colloquial form of address for a boatswain’s mate is “Boats”.

The rating of Boatswain’s Mate dates from the American Revolutionary War and was one of the oldest U.S. Navy ratings in continuous existence from 1775 to present. For a period of three months at the end of 2016, the rating (along with all ratings in the Navy) was scheduled for elimination, but the proposed change was unpopular with both sailors and Navy veterans and was reversed in December of that year.
