The New York City Marathon is an incredibly important tradition and this year’s was extra meaningful, as it was the 50th. It was to be run today, and like so many, I was registered and getting ready. Despite the marathon being held virtually, thousands of runners still participated, serving as a powerful reminder of the city’s continued strength and perseverance. New York has weathered a lot over the past several months but it’s bouncing back thanks to the resilience, passion and support of our community. Each year, the middle miles of the marathon seem the toughest, but I remind myself to keep going and take one stride after another. When the run starts getting tough, we don’t give up. We only try harder. Runners — and New Yorkers — as we’ve done in the past, remember that we will overcome the hurdles and cross the finish line faster than we think.

We have 40 stores and a newly launched website in our fleet. They all make us proud, but the one we stand for, the one that always has and will define us, is our Flagship store on 5th Avenue...today we launched our homage to our home, New York City...we are celebrating the great people that live here, work here, visit here and dream about this great city... ❤️nyc

For the better part of the last 4 years (since we move our offices downtown) I’ve done my morning run along the Hudson...no matter the time of day (usually early morning) or weather (freezing temps, rain or snow) I was never alone...people walking dogs, riding bikes, running or even sitting on a bench...for the last several months, it’s been just me. All alone. Today, I noticed they were starting to come back. All of them...walking dogs, riding bikes, running. I stopped and took it all in. For me my run is my time. It’s for me to escape. Think. That all changed today...I loved the company. I felt like everyone else on the path was in this with me. It was my favorite 8 miles in a long time...We need to Love NYC for it to love us back. ❤️nyc

Voting is a privilege - one I believe everyone should use to make their voices heard. This initiative is particularly meaningful for us as we uphold our commitment to revive New York and overcome the setback from the pandemic. It is up to all of us to take advantage of opportunities where our voice can make a difference locally and nationally. Every vote matters now more than ever.

As fall begins and many New Yorkers grapple with a new kind of city life, I’m reminded of the unwavering resilience, attitude, energy and strength that have always empowered us to thrive in the face of adversity. Like Jerry Seinfeld summed up in his New York Times piece (link to bio), I also believe in the future of this city and know that just because we get knocked down, doesn’t mean we are knocked out - ever. New York is many things to many people - it’s their home, a job market, a cultural hub, a fashion capital and more. It is home for me and for Saks Fifth Avenue, which opened here nearly 100 years ago and has been synonymous with the city ever since. I have and always will be committed to this incredible place - to the community, to our customers, my Saks family and our valued partners.

9 years ago today, after being up the entire night before, I walked into a Church basement on the Upper East side of Manhattan, I was handed this book and learned one of my first (of many) lessons...Recovery doesn’t mark the end of anything...it marks the beginning of everything...that was 3,289 days ago, of recovering one day at a time. September is National Recovery Month...if need be, please be there for a friend, a loved one and most important, yourself...
