You may hear today, February 2nd, referred to as Candlemas.
What is Candlemas?
It is another name for the Presentation of Christ in the temple, and when Mary was purified according to Jewish law.
Traditionally beeswax candles are blessed on this day, candles that would be used in the home throughout the year.
A symbol of the light that we are called to be in the world. Just as Christ was, and is, a light for us. This is also where the name derives from (Candle Mass)
Pope St John Paul II encouraged Catholics to wait on putting away their nativity and Christmas decorations until February 2nd, since this is also the end of the liturgical Christmas season.
Some ways that you can celebrate Candlemas:
- Have some candles π―οΈblessed at Mass
- Avoid using electricity and devices, if you work outside the home and need to use computer and/or phone for your job that is ok, but outside of work try to refrain from using electricity and devices π»π±
- Enjoy a candlelit dinner π½οΈ as a couple or family, and refrain from using phones or tablets during dinner, opt to encourage conversation.
- In prayer π , ask God how you can be a better light for Him in the world today, or how He is calling you to be a light for Him.
